HOLY CRAP!! You posted this just for me, didn't you?

My fourth-grade teacher used to call Spaceplex "Spacebox." God, that place was seedy. But so great.

I did!!! I did!!!

The only things I remember about actually going to Spaceplex (besides the Katie Beers stuff) are:
a) How dark it was
b) That tall rubber band jungle gym thing that HURT SO MUCH
c) Bumper cars

I must have been really young, maybe 7? I'm not sure why anyone would bring their kids there, looking back at it.

Not 7. Fourth grade. I remember listening to people tell Katie Beers jokes on line in the hallway going to gym class.

Yeah, I was gonna say-4th grade. It's weird how that Katie Beers stuff really stuck. Everyone remembers that, and what's also weird is that it turned she hadn't even been at Spaceplex, or something. At any rate, she wasn't kidnapped from there. Wow, how do I know this stuff? But yeah, weird place.

I went to Spaceplex quite a few times, probably because it was close by. I remember thinking that long hall with the black walls and the neon-colored lights you had to walk through to get in was SO COOL.

This must be a part of Lawngiland culture to which I am not privy. But it reminds me a bit of SportsWorld in NJ so maybe I sorta get it.

It was the kind of place you'd go because you could only walk around the Smithaven Mawl so many times.

It's right near where Katy grew up, but it was about half an hour away from me, so it was always hard to get someone's parent to drive there and drive back and drive there and drive back. But we'd go ice skating and sometimes play the games. We wouldn't go bowling though - Rocky Point had its own bowling alley. (And bowling sucks.)

I never realized how much they must have been depending on the league play to keep the place going. I would have thought ice skating lessons would be enough.

And Sports Plus is in fact across the street from the Smithaven Mall. It's about five minutes from my house, too. I would think that they'd get all kinds of revenue and wouldn't be so dependent on any one source of income, bowling or otherwise, but I guess not. Sports Plus always weirded me out. I don't really do video games, and I remember going there with the kids I babysat for the summer after our first year at Barnard and standing around being really bored. I had to hold their tickets while they played all the games ( ... )

We used to go bowling at Rocky Point Bowl (also really classy) and then to the Friendly's on 25A. Sometimes we'd go mini-golfing and then to Friendly's. None of them are still in business - the Friendly's has been empty for almost 10 years, and the mini-golf is overgrown and closed for longer. The bowling alley is a fencing school now.

I wonder why nobody bowls? Did everyone else figure out how much it sucked?

yeah, sports plus has been closing for 4 years. it's a miracle they lasted that long. The people in charge of things there are not the most intelligent. We knew last summer that this would be their last year for absolute certain. The House of the Living Dead has found a new home though, so at least the haunted house will live on in some form

It would be awesome if the haunted house was part of the new Whole Foods, but I guess that's too much to ask.

I think haunted foods would sell well... mostly because ghouls woudl throw things into your cart and you'd be too scared to go put them back!
