I'm actually not really familiar to the stage version, and I only have heard a few songs from it. But now I'm definitely going to listen to the cd (I've had it forever, haha). But I didn't really like Johanna...she wasn't that great of a singer. But she was purdy. Helena Bonham Carter isn't a singer either...but she was pretty good for the part. Just not as aggressive as Angela Lansbury. But flipping Johnny Depp, my GOD he was fantastic! That part is extremely hard...
My other favorite was Toby. That kid was AMAZING. He had a gooorgeous voice, and he was so good. I wanted to kidnap him.
aaaandd....Tim Burton OWNS. That's all I need to say about that.
ahaha yes, Anthony was weird-looking. A not as attractive version of Keira Knightly! I did read your unofficial review - you are correct in assuming that the color of the blood was intentional. With any other movie I proabbly would be like, "ewww blood", but in this movie it was kind of beautiful in a strange sick way. Which is all sorts of symbolism. And with their actual deaths, can you imagine the people writhing about and screaming and such in this movie? It wouldn't fit the style of the movie. I think the reason they do that in the stage version is because if they didn't move around a lot and make a lot of noise, people might not know exactly was happening. Things are a lot more exaggerated on stage.
Aaaand the opening credits were pretty awesome. I've heard the beginning of the show before, and it's awesome that they kept that whole first part of the score.
