Excerpt from Michael McGirr's open letter to 2006 school leavers:

I hope you don't need a flag of any kind to establish your identity. At any moment, a million Australians are living overseas. Not just visiting, but living. I hope you have a chance to be one of them for a while. I hope the Third World makes a powerful claim on your humanity ( Read more... )

There are more than a few people in the US who need to understand this, too.

Thanks for posting!

I think it's a message that's universally applicable.

Hey, you must be pretty happy about the outcome of the elections! I haven't read much about it to be honest, but it feels like this is a real turning point for America, yes? Will the Democrats get majority in the Senate too? And how long will it take to decide it? I'm assuming the entire counting process will be fairly transparent considering previous cock-ups.

Oh yes indeedy, I was in an AWESOME mood this morning.

The Senate is still up in the air as of right now because two states are too close to call (Montana and Virginia), but I must say I'm pretty optimistic!

"...no person is defined by a flag." A secular "amen" to that!

A 'secular "amen"', I like it.

How was the film?

Very cool but I felt so out of place lol there were three notably metal people in the room including me and my friend... Two people walked out when they showed the cover of a cannibal corpse album cover... though that might have been due to an unrelated event :)

That's a typical JJJ crowd for you! I'm only on their mailing list for the free movies. ;)

I'm glad someone who actually appreciates the subject matter could go.

How many times have I used the word 'busy' in the past few months? But in a week or so I will be distinctly not busy and I will fucking well enjoy it!

Yes, but we were all school leavers once, and not all of us turned out like that. ;)

um, how many school leavers do horrible things like that? would the percentage be greater than the amount of horrible acts committed by people in general society?

Excellent quote on history. I've 'befriended' you. Feel free to respond in kind.

Hello there, I've befriended you back. I'm Rachael.

Your user info has reminded me to rent as many Abbas Kiarostami films as I can find - something I've been meaning to do for a while now, and will have time for after I finish uni in just over a week. :)
