When Tim calls, his voice sounds tired and sad, like he's reaching out for something familiar. She knows all too well how desperate that feeling can be.
Inevitably he asks the question she prayed he wouldn’t, "How’s Jay?", and Lyla can’t speak. The only sound is her tears dripping onto the receiver.
"It’s okay," Tim’s voice soothes her. "The tie that binds, right?"
And that’s when Lyla knows they are going to be okay. It’s not perfect, but they can’t deny what brought them together in the first place. They’re different creatures, never destined to be together, but there is one thing that both Lyla and Tim have in common.
