(THE BURDEN OF THE TRUTH)
"You ever skip stones?"

Gregory stood by the lake, eyes puffy from crying and his hands stuffed in his pockets, and asked this question without looking at me.  When we had arrived at the clearing, I had assumed we would talk as he requested, not skip stones. But, knowing that Gregory was already upset, I didn't press him.

Since we can't entrust you to control who you inevitably are, we're going to do you a big favor and refund you 12 hours of your life. Yes, I think you most certainly did learn what you needed to learn about yourself that weekend, and you can thank the Christian retreat for having a paradoxical effect. And, here you are, little fella ;)

One thing I'm not clear on, though. What did the black neighbor do to Gregory when he left of with, "He wanted to help me. He... He...."?
