But had they been mass-market successes I doubt you'd have liked them, anyway. At least they did record, they are out there, known for something and not just vanishing back into the murk.

Popular acceptance of The Jesus Lizard would've meant a lot more than that. Because they were such a part of what everything popular isn't, it'd mean that the popular charts would have to be pretty much the inverse of what they are now. Who knows, maybe then I'd be rebellious and listen to Britney and claim that only singers of her ilk have any artistic merit. Or would I be pleased with the world and delight in being just another random face in it?
