After all, policies will change between years, but I guess the idea is that certain parties have more basic guiding principles which can be identified with by me, the average citizen?

My history/poly-sci background immediately quips "Um, no! Good luck to you and your baseball team on that one!" But it does depend on how basic a 'guiding principle' you're thinking about. And how long your time-line of decision/comparison is. These days parties try not to have any spots so people have to try really hard to pick up when they are changing their spots - which they are constantly doing. Anyway, I applaud your efforts! Monster Raving Looney all the way, eh :)

Erm, well, yes, I guess at the moment I'm just trying to understand what "conservative" and "liberal" mean in the grandest of senses :p Baby steps!
