tell them that you need a phone, but that you refuse to pay almost $200 for it when you have been such a loyal customer. It is $150 if you cancel your account amd switch to another carrier, and you can get a deal on a new phone when you switch. So that works out better.
If you tell them you are going to another carrier, I bet they would give you the credit now just to keep you from leaving.
I've broken many phones before, and it worked out well for me :-)

I just switched to Verizon this week and got a new phone. But I miss the old one. Even though it was a piece of crap.
