When it rains....

Good morning, Flist.

My pc has been corrupted by a malicious virus disguised as a security alert pop-up.  Of course, my laptop is no longer under Dell warranty, and Dell charges a lot of money now for tech assistance.

Therefore, I have a few questions:

1.  Does anyone know of a reliable virus-removal software I could purchase to run on my laptop to ( Read more... )

You're local to DC, right? I'd be happy to help, if you like. I do this kind of thing for a living... and I won't charge ya' as a friend :)

1. For my Windows PCs, I use Avast anti-virus. It's free for personal use, and it's very good. I won't touch Norton/Symantec, either.

2. At home, all I use is Macs. Old ones, at that. I only touch Windows when I'm being paid to (or when I'm doing a favor for a friend or family member). No operating system is perfect, but virus attacks on the Mac platform are rare enough to be considered negligible. It's just more secure by default.

If you'd like, email me (my address is on my profile page) and we can set something up. Most I might ask for is a yummy glass of iced tea :)

I had a similar virus (maybe the same?) a while ago - did yours change your background pic, too? And always tell you how many viruses you have on your computer and is trying to get you to install an anti-virus programme (which is in fact more viruses)?

The thing that helped me was Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which is free. Of course, by the time I had found out about it, the virus wouldn't let me get online anymore so I had to download it to Other Half's laptop, put it on a cd and then run it on my comp. But it worked wonders. :)))

You can download it here:

Good luck!

I can offer zero help with PC stuff, as I'm a Mac girl. :( Wishing you luck in solving the problem.

I've been on a Mac for a decade. Never had to deal with a virus.

*hugs*

Oh no!!! Poor baby. That's horrible.

I have Norton Antivirus, which makes everything run like a dog but so far *touch wood* I've been v-free about two years now.

Hope you get it fixed!
