Since going to college I have heard my fill of the "accent" discussion. And, of course, everyone has always told me what a "New Yawka" I am with my coffee ("cawfee"), dog ("dawg"), etc. However, since coming to Minnesota I find myself newly frustrated with accents. This was a really interesting entry! American accents always amaze me, or more accurately, the fact that I apparently have an accent always amazes me! Like you said, I never think others have an accent, but they always hear mine somehow! It's amazing that there's enough of a difference there for it to actually be a point of contention, or confusion. I'm glad to be living in a city where everyone tawks (lol) like me, or with even more emphasis! I hadn't heard the crayon and mall ones before those-that's weird! I don't think we say "crayon" like "crown." Maybe we just talk fast? Whatever, we're New Yawkahs! Fuck yeah!
