A Beautiful Disaster

Jun 16, 2008 15:41

You can view some interesting professional photographs of the flood in Cedar Rapids at this site.  This is pretty darn sad. Today is the day we get to wash dishes, shower, and wash clothes, so I better get crackin'! (Even numbered houses get to use water for showering, laundry, and dishes on even days)

That's kind of what we said as we made our way back into town after having been gone on vacation.

I'm so glad to see your post. How close are you to CR/flooded area? I've been thinking of you all weekend and hoped you were ok. Connor saw the floods on the news yesterday. I was explaining to him that I was worried about our online friends. He kind of gets the whole thing because our basement flooded last year. It was only a few inches but still a pain since Avery was a newborn at the time. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Thanks so much for the thoughts, Nancy. We actually live quite a ways from the flooding. I suppose that's the nice thing about living in a newer housing development. :) It just going to get stinky around here, that's all.

Obviously you guys got into town okay, which way did you have to go?

I took a shower this morning, we'll give G a quick bath tonight and run one load of laundry. Nate turned off the water to the toilets and we're using water he caught from the storm on Saturday to flush them. I should forward you the email he sent of photos of the Alliant building downtown. It's crazy.

We ended up stopping in Davenport to ask about the roads at the Iowa Welcome center and got some good info. We ended up going to Maquoketa, taking 64 to Anamosa, then taking 151 into Marion and up to County Home Road to 380.

Please send me those photos; I'd love to see them. As far as the toilets go, we're operating on the "if it's yellow let it mellow; if it's brown flush it down" mode. Even then, I'll let it sit for a while until I'm sure we can't go much further. I think I'm going to give the kids a baby wipe rub-down tonight since we showered this morning. Since we were on vacation, I need to do a minimum of three loads of laundry (undies, Chris' work clothes, and the kids' clothes).

So glad to hear you guys are ok! We've flooded quite a bit here (not my house, but those closer to the rivers) but nothing near as bad as you guys.
