Three Years Later
They are unfailingly polite to each other. They never fight. They have heated discussions, sure, but they always arrive at a consensus in the end. They laugh, they cry, they tell each other stories, they reminisce. They explore, they marvel at the sights they see, they hold hands. They play chess.
None of them ever get sick.
They eat and drink and go to the bathroom, they fall asleep at night and dream and wake up in the morning and go back to work. They talk to her, ask her advice, her opinion.
They make love. A lot.
Three years after her crew was forced to evacuate and return to Earth at gunpoint by an administration that had no need for the answer to the ultimate question of how the universe began, Destiny could bear the loneliness no longer.
So she made her own crew, fashioning them after those she had protected for over two years. She had plenty of organic material on board and immeasurable amounts of data collected directly from their minds.
After millions of years of being on her own Destiny could not fathom finishing her journey alone, with nobody to share her discoveries. She loved her crew. She misses them, the slight ache never really fading away.
She pretends nothing has changed.
She will complete the mission.
It’s not exactly the same, but she is determined to see it through.
She is content.
