An interesting bit of old news: life is shot

Ever since I came back on Friday I've been too depressed to write anything on LJ. It wasn't the leaving process but the return that got me down; you live somewhere for a month completely unrelated to reality and you become rather...addicted. Most everything that occured would be disinteresting to anyone who was not present. Rather an inside joke ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, my source is currently residing smugly on a library shelf, but here's my explination:

In the US, there is a mental health registry of sorts which catagorizes different mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, different forms of depression, and the like. Of course, like anything on a grand scale, there are some odd entries. Until a few years ago (anywhere between 20 and 30, I can't remember), it was possible to be admitted to a mental hospital for homosexuality. Protests had it taken off, but because of public relations issues, a related area remains: gender dysphoria. It means exactly what it sounds like (unhappiness with one's gender), but has been interpreted as everything from transsexuality to simply breaking society's conventions. Because of this entry, it is possible to get insurance coverage for hormones and treatment, but it perpetuates the idea of an 'illness', and 'cures' have been forced on some who don't even want it.

Does that clear things up, or should I go pick up the book and type out an excerpt?

How are your universities? I know someone who goes to one in Boston, but she never really said much.

Thankfully, Madison is famous for being liberal, so I'm not bad off. Life goes on.

Nice to be back! Especially for the cyber company. :)

The end of first semester, i.e. January. And keep in mind, it's still school, only harder.

Ah. Will you be joining a school especially for exchange students?

Nope. I'll be fully integrated by attending a public school and staying with a family. Oh, the joy!
