In the US, there is a mental health registry of sorts which catagorizes different mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, different forms of depression, and the like. Of course, like anything on a grand scale, there are some odd entries. Until a few years ago (anywhere between 20 and 30, I can't remember), it was possible to be admitted to a mental hospital for homosexuality. Protests had it taken off, but because of public relations issues, a related area remains: gender dysphoria. It means exactly what it sounds like (unhappiness with one's gender), but has been interpreted as everything from transsexuality to simply breaking society's conventions. Because of this entry, it is possible to get insurance coverage for hormones and treatment, but it perpetuates the idea of an 'illness', and 'cures' have been forced on some who don't even want it.
Does that clear things up, or should I go pick up the book and type out an excerpt?

When are you departing for France? It sounds like it will be an excellent experience.

The end of first semester, i.e. January. And keep in mind, it's still school, only harder.
