Buyin' a car and movin' on out

So I was planning on the whole transition from living home down the Jersey shore to living in New Brunswick situation to be somewhat slow, calculated, and planned out. That’s not quite the way things are panning out. Last night I found out that the summer sublet on my room fell through so now I am being asked to move in July 1st. Whereas I am ( Read more... )

Yeah the whole buying a new car for the first time is a very intimidating prospect. I've spent the past couple days trying to do some research on cars that I might want to purchase in the not so distant future. I know a lot of car dealerships offer incentives to recent grads which is good even though it usually isn't a great deal of money. And if you have some type of letterhead regarding a job offer w/ salary offer most dealers will allow you to finance with a 2-3 month grace period before payments kick in.

My dad is taking me when we actually go to purchase the car. He loves to haggle down the price of a car and usually gets himself a sweet deal. My dad is really cheap so thats why he developed those skills I would assume. You should just find someone with a bit of carbuying experience to go with you on the day. And I also know some car companies have special offers with Amazon.com where if you test-drive a car you can get a free $50 giftcertificate as well.

Well good luck with it all...

Wow, thanks for the advice! Do you know offhand which dealers offer a 2-3 month grace period? Believe it or not, that option is the taker as far as where I'm going to buy from...

You hit it right on the nose - the whole process is intimidating! Good luck in your search!

A lot of the specials for car companies you have to contact individual car dealerships to find out the offers they have because they vary from one dealer to the next even though they might sell the same cars. Just click on the dealer locators on the webpages and you can get phone numbers to local dealers you can contact and shoot by them some questions. It sucks because some of the better deals are for leasing a car a lot of times. You can check the car company webpages for a limited amount of deals also. They like to pretend they change them up from month to month but they are always the same it seems just listed in a different order. Some cars I have seen with pretty sweet deals are Honda Civics (a must have for living in New Jersey it seems), Nissan Sentras, Hyundai somethings or other, VW Jettas, Ford Focus.

Tonight I'm gonna ask my dad how he goes about his car haggling...

If you want the name of a good insurance agent, let me know & I'll give you mine. He gave me a rate almost 50% lower than what everyone else was offering. I've sent a few other people to him and they've been equally impressed.

He is Allstate, but he quoted me less than what other Allstate agents were giving me. I'm not really sure how he does it... let me know if you want his info though.

That would be great! My email address is jsanfili@eden.rutgers.edu - if you want to email his name and number. My mother works for Allstate and got me a quote, but it was absurdly high. (I guess she doesn't get a discount *lol*) If this agent that you knows can get it for me cheaper then I'm all game! :-)
