Step 1: Write something worth publishing. Doesn't even matter what length.

Step 2: Find someone willing to publish it. Much easier today than ever before.

Step 3: Most important--LOUDLY PROMOTE THE HELL OUT OF WHATEVER YOU PUBLISH IN. The people who are successful in publishing these days are those who really get in front of other people who may be interested. Whatever you think of their writing, people like Zia, Kyell, and yes Graveyard Greg get their success based on promoting.

Heh, well, he probably wouldn't have a problem with Step 3, except it particularly seems to help if you go to cons XD

I've watched tons of books live and die not by their relative merits, but by their presentation and promotion. There are certainly better and worse ways to work, but I've watched face to face interactions do wonders. That means getting in front of lots of people, and if you're furry, that means going to places where there are lots of furries... I.e. cons.

It may not be strictly necessary, I don't think Kyell Gold made any official con appearances until his third or so novel, but without it, you're going to bump into some furry ceilings, and quite probably sooner rather than later.

Still, there is definitely something to be said for quality. You can get people to buy a book once relatively easily, but if that book sucks, your next book sales will reflect it...
