i used to wonder how on earth people could misspell even common words such as "detergent", "electronic", "unemployment", "morphine", or "emergency"; after all, if one has ever seen a word spelled correctly in print, one should be able to duplicate it, shouldn't one? (gods, that may be the single most awkwardly-constructed sentence i've ever written!)
but eventually i realized that many people simply never read, unless compelled to by threat or direst necessity. it's still hard for me to comprehend this, because it's difficult for me to not read unless similarly compelled.
