Three Peaks Thoughts

Jul 23, 2012 17:24

So, the three peaks.

Before I start let me say that yes, I did fail. We managed two of the three. On the other hand I’m still massively proud of what I did, utterly loved every moment and am already making plans to go for it again.

So, a bit of a round up of what happened:

As Meatloaf once sang "Two out of three ain't bad."

Excellent achievement there sir, well done!

I might have been playing that song on the train on the way back.

Thanks. It really is only the left calf that hurts now. Apart from a little sun burn everything else is fine. It seems training *does* help!

sounds an awesome experience- did you do much in the way of training for it or just rely on your devastating levels of physical fitness? (Asking for my own purposes as I've been talked in to trying to walk 50km in 12 hours in a few months . . .)

Rob and I ran up and down the stairs at work for half an hour. (Walk up, walk down, run up, walk down). That's a great way to increase your cardio and also help with the leg muscles. I also run now and then and do the odd pushup. 50k in 12 hours should be doable. You don't look like you're in bad shape so I'd be more worried about cramps and joint problems, as well as blisters. I can show you some stretches and it might be worth building up the muscles around your knees a bit. Get good boots and blister plasters and make sure you get a few miles under your belt before you head off and you should be fine. Oh, and bring nibbles! You can get load of gimicky power bars and what ever but really there just glorified musli bars. I just brought nute, dried fruit and chocolate and that served me fine.

great, thanks for the tips! I think preparation is definitely the main thing (and not usually one of my strengths) but seeing the stretches could be cool too. I don't do much that's specifically *exercise but am quite active generally and like going for walks/climbing hills when I can, although it's not that often. May walk the 12km to work during the Olympics to get into the swing of things . . .
