So I was watching Supernatural. A nice enough series with a distinctly action based bent. But then I realised something very important. It's opening credits. Blink and their gone! And that's happening a lot these days with series. They don't have opening credits, I mean, not really. And that's crazy! When I was growing up US imports had AMAZING ( Read more... )

You forgot "The Equalizer"!

And then, of course, you can get into the cartoons. MASK, Transformers, Thundercats, Ulysses, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, all really epic intros.

I specifically chose to not mention cartoons in that post. THough in the cold light of day I can't for the life of me think why.

Battlestar Galactica has a pretty epic theme tune, but then again they paid a lot of attention to music throughout the entire series.

It's ok, though most of it is basically wailing until the 5 second hyper-spoiler bit at the end of it.

i love the opening credits of True Blood, though i don't know if it counts as a proper theme tune.

See my comment about HMV music. It's good, but... Well... I really like the opening music to 4400, but it's not a THIS IS A THEME TUNE opening.

Fair. I think the visuals make a great combination to give a distinct open credit sequence, but it's not the same.

Do kid's shows have them?

I don't watch as many cartoons these days as I used to, I must be honest.

I think it's a great thing. Opening credits were just dead space.

Bones has a pretty solid opening credit sequence. Hawaii Five-O also does, but that's a rehash of the original. Elementary has a reasonable but short one.

But I love the Supernatural ones - they use the recap to get their theme music time in. Nothing like watching a recap of last season's monster kills to a bit of AC/DC.

Dead space!? The sheer jour de vive* I feel when ever I hear the MacGyver theme tune is hard to top. I don't think of them as dead space at all. If I go and see Lawrence of Arabia I want to sit down to the full 20 minuet opening overture. It sets the mood.

I'm not saying theme tunes are always good, just that certain ones are so powerful that they become something great in and of themselves, and I'm sorry it doesn't really happen any more.

*I hope you're happy. I'm so shocked you got me using french.

Breaking Bad has the shortest theme tune in Televison history. Still a great Series though
