Our local council has recently announced that it will be making it illegal for council tenants to hang flags from their houses. The exact wording it this:

I do agree with you. To fly a flag out of your window is crass.

Admittedly we did at the point when the Olympics was on, but that was entirely the wife's idea.

You mention the Americans but I really think they take it too far. They get upset when someone burns their flag. That's like a terrorist act. But it's just a piece of fabric. It's like suggesting that by burning the flag that they're hurting the idea of your country? Nonsense!

My point was more that if you are flying the flag as a symbol of respect, then you should respect that symbol. But yes, I do have issues with imbuing a flag with so much import. It's just some fabric. It's interesting that the only rule we have for flag disposal in the military is in the royal navy where, when the unions flag get's worn, you ct it up and sue it as cleaning rags.

But then I'm British. We have a very different history to the USA. Personally I think a key difference is that we have had a constant monarchy for centuries. The US don't have that. They have their flag. it symbolises a lot more there than our flag does to us.

Nah, i think you're right. Symbols are important to people, and we have different symbols to the yanks.
When you attack symbols to which people have an emotional attachment, don't get surprised if they get uppity.

It's true. I'm no ardent monarchist, but if someone set fire to the Queen I would be really upset.
