I feel that depression occurs because we don't want to acknowledge or express our negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, resentment and so on. Without a release for the stress, it reaches a point where we just shut down from outside stimuli.
There is a grain of truth in the idea that being active and social helps prevent us from being overwhelmed.
