I like the imagery in this poem, thanks for sharing!
I think about this a lot since being my work often puts me in the midst of pretty intense poverty. I think you have to recognize the sorrow in the world, and do what you can about it in relation to how much it bugs you. But to let it destroy your own attempts to feel any peace in your life (including developing a conception of your world and relationships as relatively secure, and having hope for the future) is counterproductive. If you sacrifice your own well-being at the expense of greater human suffering, then how will you be well enough to make any positive contributions? I think there's a saying that sums this up, something along the lines of "it is blessed to give, but how can we give if we have nothing to give?".
We just have to do the best we can, feel some satisfaction about that, and hope every single day that things beyond our control will improve with time. It's a balancing act. That's my life philosophy at least. ;)
