I think going to a track to practice and get advice is a lovely idea.
I can understand your concerns about that, too; of course, as you say, they're unfounded, but as you also say, knowing that doesn't necessarily make them easier to deal with. The best advice I have there is to just do it: there's no other way to overcome that fear. Do it as soon as possible, too; in fact, if at all possible, book a ticket (for the next possible day when you've got time) today or tomorrow. Resolve to make that booking, perhaps write yourself a little note to do it in the morning or so; until then, don't think the whole thing anymore. Similarly, once the booking's in place, forget about the whole thing again until it's actually time to go.
If you have someone else who could accompany you, that'd be ideal, too, I think.
I think that's what I will have to do in the end. Just click the reserve button and go from there; I'm certain when I actually go I'll not regret the experience in the least!
Having a friend (or even acquaintance) who could accompany me would be fantastic! It's actually something I've had on my mind, how there are a number of things I would like to do/try/attempt but for the lack of friends who share that particular interest with me, though, I think that's a whole other subject of discussion and one I will reserve for a (near) future post :)
