I wrote a fic a few nights ago and haven't posted it yet. Only now I just realized that a BNF recently posted a fic that is quite similar to the one I just wrote. I didn't copy the fic but the premise is somewhat similar and in parts even the execution. This is the first time I've written in ages and now it feels like I didn't even accomplish that because it's basically the same fic as one that was posted already by someone much better than me.

This happened to me too. Well, not quite as badly, since I didn't write the whole thing, but I had plotted out and researched and basically obsessed over it in my head for a while before discovering that someone had written literally exactly that fic, and it was already quite popular.

I just sulked over it and gave up. :(

Sorry, anon. I'd say post it anyway, but I really get how you feel.

Oh no, that's the worst, too. :( Normally I would say "Write it for yourself" but I understand how frustrating it can be once you realize it's already been done. It's hard to come up with purely original ideas sometimes.

I'm worried that if I posted it, people would notice the similarities and accuse me of copying/stealing it when I didn't at all. Maybe I'll just write it off as practise or something... gah.

I know. I know I should just get over it and post it because I know it's my own work/thoughts/creativity, but I don't want to deal with anyone else thinking otherwise. I guess it's my problem.

And on the other hand, I suppose if I cared quite enough I would just write it for myself. But eh.

IT'S OKAY, WE'LL THINK OF SOMETHING ELSE, ANON.

WE CAN JUST HAVE A "OUR STORIES ARE ACTUALLY OUR IDEAS BUT THEY READ A LOT LIKE SOMEONE ELSE'S WOOPS" PARTY! OR SOMETHING?

Re: God damnit anonymous July 15 2012, 00:17:02 UTC
I'VE ACTUALLY NOT READ THE OTHER PERSON'S STORY, BECAUSE I WAS TOO FUCKING ANNOYED. I JUST READ THE SUMMARY. BUT IT'S A VERY, VERY SPECIFIC KIND OF AU, SO I'M JUST GOING TO ASSUME THAT THE IDEA IS OFFICIALLY TAKEN.

BUT YES WE CAN. LET'S GET DRUNK AND WRITE RIDICULOUS DRUNKEN FIC THAT'S SO RIDICULOUS THAT NO ONE IN THE UNIVERSE COULD HAVE POSSIBLY THOUGHT OF IT.

Should this be official crack or somewhat serious until Anderson doesn't wear his shoes or socks and has dinosaur feet?

DA

I LAUGHED OUT LOUD and kind of want this.

Would Sherlock be able to deduce that Anderson has dino feet before everyone finds out? Is that why he hates Anderson so much? He has dinophobia?

yes yes yes!

OR Sherlock is repulsed by Anderson's prehistoricness and Sherlock is modern and cool because it is relevant.

oh wow :X

this really sucks for both of you. It really does because people who don't know will judge.

I'd say post it anyway if it's not very equal because I've seen plenty fics that are the same "sherlock doing an experiment with john" and "sherlock and john masturbate together for research" but I'll read them all anyway.

also, it kinda sucks that you can't/won't post because sometimes the same fic can work better if it has a better narrative.

hum this is tough

OP agrees. I don't think my style is similar to the other author's but I don't really want to run the risk of getting nasty comments. The fact that the other author is well-known puts me off, too. Not that I would feel better if the other author was virtually unknown because it still feels like I didn't create it, even though I wrote it... but if the other author is well-known that just runs a higher risk of someone reading the two and seeing similarities, I guess. :\

I started plotting out a fic about Anthea, going down the route that she got her job the normal way and is just an awesome PA...as I was randomly browsing FFN (I was bored), I stumbled across something that was more or less exactly the same.

I sulked and filed it away.

Post it here for us maybe?

Hmm, maybe I'll do that. I don't know... should I mention which fic I think it's like or should I just post it? Also, it's almost 5000 words long. D:

Post it and a link to the one you think is like yours, maybe it's not really that similar :)
