When it Gets to Be Too Bad anonymous December 10 2011, 08:21:05 UTC
Whenever Sherlock was growing up and the world got too loud, or people got too mean, or all the little white letters got to be too much a man would appear and stroke his hair and tell him it was alright, he knew that Sherlock could get through this. Sherlock would always ask the man to stay, and sometimes he would for a little while, but before the hour was up the man would disappear again, saying he would only stay when Sherlock was in real trouble and wouldn't be able to take it on his own. All his life the man would come and never stay, no matter how much danger Sherlock put himself in or how much cocaine he shot until one normal, regular day the man was introduced to him as John Watson.

Hi, OP! I hope you’re still tracking this, because I have a few questions for you. I started attempting to fill this and it sort of got away from me a little… Is it okay if John doesn’t actually know how/why he’s where he is? So re: the bit where you write, “he would only stay when Sherlock was in real trouble and wouldn't be able to take it on his own” - that’s what’s happening, but John doesn’t know it and therefore doesn’t say that. If that makes sense.
John’s appearances are also a lot more sporadic than I suspect you were hoping for, though the fic does track them throughout Sherlock’s life. And, it’s post-The Reichenbach Fall, so spoilers for that - is that okay?
Also, it’s John/Sherlock - I’m not sure if you want that or not; the phrasing of the prompt seemed at least open to it, but I thought I’d check just in case. If you’re cool with all that, I’ll polish up what I’ve got, and stick it up online. =D

[Feel free to ask if any of this doesn't make sense. I'm a bit sleep-deprived at the moment, so I'm rambling more than usual.

I saw your reply this morning and thought, bloody hell that's an awesome prompt and followed the link to find I'd already seconded. I hope even if the OP doesn't get back to you that you go on to fill this!

If the OP doesn't respond by the time the fic's polished up (which could be a few weeks), I'll probably post it anyway. My beta thinks I'm nitpicking and that the fic's not actually that far off from the prompt, so it's entirely likely I'm worrying too much. =D At any rate, it'll at least go up on my journal - it's just a question of whether the OP wants a link here as well!

Hey! Wasn't sure if you'd be tracking this post or not, so a) on the off-chance you haven't seen my comment below and b) you're still interested - I've gone ahead and posted the fic up on my journal here. =D

Hey OP - I went ahead and posted the fic after some cleaning up. It's on my journal here; I hope you like it! =D

[Anyone who might be inclined to leave a comment, please do so on the fic post itself instead of here; I like having all my comments in one place. Thanks! =)]
