"Open Season" on Lestrade = possible whumpage, violence, H/C

Lestrade's made a lot of enemies in his time. Criminal enemies. After Sherlock's fall, the sensationalist media plays up Lestrade's disgrace and suspension from his position (along with plenty of photos), and some of those enemies realise that Lestrade is now a man alone, without the Yarders behind him, without so much as a baton for self-defence. In fact, it actually would solve some of the problems faced by the Met's senior leadership if Lestrade just... disappeared.
I'd like to see who (if anyone) realises how vulnerable Lestrade is and tries to watch out for him, before it's too late.
Whumpage, violence, and darkfic don't scare me. ;)

John and Mycroft to the rescue! It's probably heresy, but one thing I'm really enjoying about the post-Reichenbach wait is all the attention the supporting characters get - and this is a wonderful example!

John held his tongue as the black sedan sped into the night. Mycroft's full attention was focused on his phone, receiving reports and issuing instructions. Repeated phrases such as "satellite images," "surveillance photos," and "intercepted footage" suggested that the manhunt for Lestrade was yielding fruit

John's helplessness gnawed at him, and his simmering, frustrated anger - so close to the surface these days since Sherlock's fall - boiled over, seeking an outlet

Oooooh, I'm on the edge of my seat here!
"A man in my position has no friends, John," Mycroft said at last, with an edge to his voice that John couldn't identify. "But if he's fortunate, he may have allies. And if he's intelligent, he will protect those allies whenever he's able to do so."
Loved this - quintessentially Mycroft, in that it can be read in several different ways at once!

John lost track of time and distance as they put London behind them. The sedan turned from one less-travelled road to another. Rolling fields replaced city blocks

It's wonderful to hear that those lines in particular seem properly Mycroft-ish. Thank you for the lovely feedback - and for reading!

I really liked John's realization that Mycroft and Lestrade were friends.
