"I have been reliably informed I don't have [a heart]," Sherlock says. Why not make it a bit more literal?
Options/plot bunnies -Sherlock was cursed/enchanted at birth -Sherlock's heart has been sealed away -Sherlock was born without a heart (or perhaps with the wrong kind of heart) -Sherlock's heart has been stolen or otherwise placed outside of his body -Someone has to quest for/liberate/find/un-enchant Sherlock's heart
OP also adds...

The moment I hit 'enter', I thought, 'And all throughout London, the policemen say, Sherlock's heart grew three sizes that day.' It seems a little mean, though...
I'm also now wondering if the Tin Man should have been a sociopath....

This isn’t much of a fairy tale, sorry OP. Everyone added these great inspiring comments, too, and I just sort of went in the opposite direction. Your prompt actually reminded me of a Gundam Wing fic I read ages ago, which was in turn inspired by the song “Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart”. I’d give credit where credit is due, but all I remember is that I read it on GWAddiction, so it’s more or less a needle in a haystack. If anyone is terribly interested I can re-scour and see if I can find it, or someone else can find it and tell me, because this has been bothering me for days

The girls he spent time with were twittering, silly things with vacant eyes that would be best described as 'not unattractive'. They giggled and swayed their hips far too much, and wore their hearts on their sleeves, bare for all to see everything that coursed through them. It utterly confused Sherlock as to why someone as intelligent as Mycroft would waste time with them and after observing them unawares on four occasions only to be caught on the fifth, Sherlock voiced this frustration loudly to an irritated Mycroft and the vapid girl blinking next to him

If he were capable of feeling disappointment, Sherlock would have when Moriarty made that statement. How utterly banal- and to waste so much conviction on it, too

Ooh! I've read that GW fic - 1x2, right? And they break into the warehouse because Heero doesn't want to give Duo his heart back and then Heero's heart is broken . The prompt reminded me of that too!
BUT anyways, back to the Sherlock.
This was wonderful. I love the concept and though I can see the influence of the GW fic, it's definitely its own story and I'm really interested to see what happened to Sherlock's heart and how the concept develops.

You know, literally right after i posted the fic, I gave GWAddiction one more look, and managed to find the darn thing right away! "Lost and Found" by Lys ap Adin, if you're interested. I think it's just one of those concepts that stick with you, the idea of being able to literally give someone your heart.

Even after a shower and fresh set of clothes, the wiggling mass persists, and Sherlock finds his brain muddled and tumbling bits of irrelevant data from the past few hours over and around his skull. It’s more than a little disconcerting, and Sherlock finds himself reaching for his violin in an attempt to quiet his restless mind and body
