John is not a blogger who writes about his flatmate. John is a writer. He never was in Afghanistan, never got shot, never even run through London chasing a cab. And Sherlock is just a character and it's not like John is in love with him or anything. Except for the small part, when he's based on John's arrogant neighbour who is far too pretty to be real anyway. (I'm a sucker for a happy John/Sherlock.)
Bonus points for all real things John dragged into his books, but changed them. The annoying guy he met in library ended up being Anderson, Harry is actually his brother, but John needed more female characters, weird things like that.

tl;dr John is a writer. Sherlock is fictional.

This. I love this!

There's one where John is a romance novelist. But this deserves it's very own fill. This is amazing!

Yes! Please, someone fill this. I have too much on my plate to do it myself, but OMG this is what I do for my own stories. I'll be babbling away to someone and they'll go, "Wait a minute, is that based on me?" and I'll be like, "Uhhhh...."

And I'm still babbling, because this is SO COOL someone please fill this.

Oh I'm so tempted to do this but I think I'd end up dragging in bits of ACD's life to fill the gaps in John Watson's.

Um, perhaps not exactly what you were wanting, but I've done a fill here.
