I've seen Gladstone!cat prompts, but wasn't Gladstone canonically acquired as a tracking animal? Aren't there other 'pet' animals nowadays that track as well or better, or have other practical case uses?

'Coz I'm seeing them with a pot-bellied pig or a ferret or something and it's quite gigglesome.

Oh flip. I was browsing for fic to read, and then I saw THIS. And I may just have to fill this prompt, because it's made of WIN.

It's got to be the ferret XD

The morning of Thursday, the 26th of October dawned surprisingly brightly, as though the sun had leapt out of bed in a fit of enthusiasm. However, as is wont to happen in these cases of early morning fervour, the sunshine had faded to an occasional burst by lunchtime, and by the time five thirty rolled around, had been entirely usurped by menacing grey rain clouds ( ... )

Five minutes later, he was feeling considerably more human. It was truly amazing the effect that dry jeans had on the contentment of the soul. Pulling a clean jumper over his head, John wrenched open the middle drawer of his dresser ( ... )

2009 movie =/= canon. It had to be said.

Sorry, I had thought I remembered a dog from the books.

For what it's worth, I think you did. That is, I think you conflated two different dogs: Toby the tracking dog (who didn't belong to Holmes, but to an acquaintance of his) from at least one of the books, and Gladstone the bulldog (based on the possibly-not-literal book-canon reference to Watson "keep[ing] a bull pup") from the 2009 movie. Because AFAIR, there was no reference made in the movie to Gladstone being a tracking dog at all (and given his character/purpose in the movie, I'd find it highly unlikely that a reference was made and I just missed it every time I saw the film).

In canon, there WAS a dog, but it belonged to a guy that Holmes knew. It's name was Toby and he was used briefly as a sniffer in The Sign of The Four, I do believe. Other than that, there was the bull-terrier that belonged to Victor Trevor from The Gloria Scott and an old terrier that belonged to Mrs Hudson that was killed in A Study in Scarlet. Also, the hound, of course, from The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Gladstone only belonged to Watson in the 2009 movie; he was based off of the 'bull-pup' that Watson mentioned in A Study in Scarlet, but he really was referring to his temper.

And the killer dog from the Copper Beeches. Which Watson also kills. He does seem to have a thing for shooting dogs...

Ahh, yes, I do recall that one. I was kind of confused and bemused at the Granada series where Watson took two shots to shoot the stationary lock two feet away, but one shot to kill the dog from twenty feet while it was busy mauling the dude. xD

Argh. Sorry. I had thought they had a dog in the books, but I guess that was just a loaner. I feel like a complete idiot now. :(

Noooo, don't feel bad! Just feel educated now. xD I actually really blame the 2009 movie and all it's canonical inaccuracies for a lot of the misconceptions about Holmes. And remember, there were a lot of instances of dogs in canon, just no Gladstone~

gladstone is watson's dog that he has in study in scarlet, ("I keep a bull pup" he confesses when listing his short comings/vices to holmes when they first meet) that is arguably his dog, gun, or his temper, but many ppl go with dog. as far as i know, We never see his dog in any of the stories or anywhere else in study in scarlet, and the dog was named Gladstone by the '09 movie (to my knowledge) and I'm pretty sure is not in any other canons, although i cant say i ve seen them all. the tracking dog you are referring to, i believe is named toby and is in the sign of four and is owned by someone else and holmes borrows it.

altho, dont let that stop you from prompting a fic where they get a tracking dog, id read that.

altho, dont let that stop you from prompting a fic where they get a tracking guinea pig, that would be hilarious.
