Sherlock knows he's a difficult roommate; he also knows he's a difficult boyfriend and difficult boyfriends run a high risk of being dumped.
He can't stop John from leaving him, but he can make it harder for other people to steal him away.
I'd like to see paranoid, panicky, possessive Sherlock doing his best to stamp a virtual MINE sign on John: hickeys, wearing John's jumpers, having him wear Sherlock's scarf, buying matching watches/rings/bracelets, significant touching...
I'd especially like to see other people's reaction to this new brand of weirdness.

Not exactly what the OP seemed to want - it's less entertaining and more bizarre character study. There are a few reactions, but nowhere near enough for the prompt really... but... uh... Hope it works anyway.
Approximately eighty five percent of the crimes Sherlock solves are direct consequences of romantic relationships, sex in particular. Lust and love govern the human mind a disturbing amount and Sherlock has always been grateful that he, at least, is above that. He has prided himself that he will not fall to such pathetic problems.
And then there is John.
It is a humbling moment, the moment he realises that he has succumbed - that he is, as everyone has constantly reminded him, human with all its petty problems and idiotic desires

“The world does not revolve around you, Sherlock,” Mycroft has told him a thousand times. “It doesn’t bend itself to your will.”

Sherlock could try to be the perfect boyfriend, caring and listening, doing things without being asked, but it doesn’t work. He gets distracted, he forgets, and his mind is never wholly on John, apart from sometimes, in bed when they sink together and the world suddenly shrinks, or falls away and all there is is contact and John and John and John.
But the rest of the time there is boredom and there are cases, and there are a million little details of life that are more interesting, more distracting and it is not that he doesn’t think of John, it’s just that there is a part of his brain dedicated to that, but the rest is busy working. Always working

There are times when their relationship is normal, completely normal. Crisps and beer and bad films, a hand on a thigh, a kiss to an ear, to a neck and then tumbling over each other

I love Sherlock character studies, and this one was great.
They are louder than any marks he has ever left on John. I love that this is such a happy thing, and a good ending to the fic's central dilemma. It's also hot(ttt). ♥

Anybody interested in making this happen?
