Sherlock is amazing at disguising. John knows this; he's seen him in countless disguises and if Sherlock really tries he can make himself look completely unlike himself.
Then one day for a case Sherlock wears a disguise John hasn't seen on him before, and John recognises him. Recognises him as the first man he ever slept with, in a night club, who afterwards had said he had just needed a diversion to stop some other guy noticing him. Then left without looking back. The whole incident totally fucked up John's head for weeks, broke up his relationship, and almost got him kicked out of med school for not focussing/missing assignments/failing tests because all he could think about was what an idiot he'd been.

TL;DR - Sherlock disguises himself for a case, and John recognises him as the guy who shagged him in a night club (his first time with a bloke) when he was in med school before buggering off, in an incident that almost ruined John's life.

I'd like it to be recorded to the record that I am waiting very patiently and shall continue to do so in a calm and collected manner.

This state of Zen was accomplished by ripping out my F5 key and eating it. It was an acceptable loss though not very tasty.

a/n definitely winding down here. I keep saying there's 3-4k more to go, but to be honest, I really don't know. As I write, things keep coming up, demanding explanation. So, while it's winding down, it may wind down with 5k or it may wind down with 10k. :) Also, seriously, all of you, thank you for the comments and the support. You've been so patient and so wonderful and I seriously want to buy you all a drink. ♥

December 1992John sits with one leg crossed, bouncing his foot erratically, waiting. He's been sitting in the Director's office for fifteen minutes now; he's rather certain that Doctor Canterbury (Director of Medical Education) is making him wait on purpose ( ... )

"Sir?"

"Watson, this is what I can offer you: ten days. I've intervened with your instructors and they're offering this as a personal favour to me. You have ten days to complete your missing assignments, to catch up with your coursework. You are required to show up for lessons, to participate -- basically, to be a bloody beacon of medical brilliance."

John's heart leaps; he can barely believe it. A week ago he was certain that they were going to kick him out, and now he's got a chance to fix it.

Canterbury looks very seriously at him. "But this is it, though. A doctor needs to be calm in a crisis, Watson ... able to confront any challenge and meet it head on. You show me you can do this, and I'll keep you in. But--" his gaze is stern "--if you miss a single assignment, a single class, if any piece of work you turn in is sub-par, then you're out. Studying at St. Bart's is a privilege. I expect you to treat it as such."

John takes a shallow breath. "Thank you, sir. I won't ... I mean, I appr-- I mean, thank you"Yes ( ... )

"Shut up."

"I'm sorry?"

"Shut up, Sherlock. Shut up. Don't talk. Don't deduce anything. Just shut your bloody face and listen."

Sherlock cocks his head at him, blinks, but doesn't open his mouth.

"You have to stop this. You have to stop all of it. Explain to me, please Sherlock, because I don't understand. You follow me around; try to fool me in every normal facet of my life. You disguise yourself so brilliantly; no one's ever looked at you skeptically, least of all me. Every single, bloody disguise flirts with me, turns me on, and ... for whatJohn paces to the fireplace, comes back. "You have to explain it me, because I've been running it through my head all day, Sherlock, and I really don't understand. Why are you doing this? Why ( ... )

Jesus fucking wept and so did I when I saw this was posted. Holy hell in a handbasket I flipped out and lost it then broke down in tears. Anon, you have no idea how much I love this fic.

Imma compose myself I swear. Okay, all good now. Sorta. Breathing. Woah.

NOW: holy crap I knoooooow what Sherlock is doing~ Eff yes. He liked young!John but being the big stupid idiot he is, he was in disguise so it wasn't like he could show up as someone else (ie: himself) and then say: 'HEY remember that awesome sex?! Yeah that was me! Again please kthx.'

Anyway, my brainpan has a few different ways this could resolve itself so I am literally aching to see what you do.

Seriously, it's worse than orgasm denial.

Just please.... I beg of you... don't keep me waiting that long again. Though the tears of unfathomable sadness are quite yummy so maybe that was your devious plan all along.

November 1992John wakes to a sense of idyllic contentment. He feels really, really good. Yawning, John glances around. It's dark out, only a bit of moonlight shining through, lighting stripes over the duvet. John's on his back, his muscles pleasantly relaxed, and there's a warm arm draped across his stomach, long hair tickling his shoulder ( ... )
