Filled (a second time!): Best Laid Plans (1/14) anonymous May 11 2011, 11:58:44 UTC
Hey, prompter whose brain I love. Your prompt is so awesome it's getting a second fill. The first draft of this is done -- I'm editing as I go, and should be posting over the next few days. But have a pre-work opening scene for now! (Also, excuse the cliched title, I just figured I should do something to distinguish it from the other fill ( ... )

He must have drifted off, because he was startled awake by the squeal of the cell door. For a moment he was disoriented, the dreamed memory of Sherlock’s amused voice blurring with reality as he sat. He blinked the world into clarity and found himself facing the other Holmes brother. (The only one, now ( ... )

Sherlock couldn’t sleep. Instead he prowled the edges of his tiny cell with a nervous energy, ready to run as soon as Mycroft’s men burst in. What was taking them so long? No doubt Moriarty had his tracks well covered, but Mycroft had near infinite resources and an inexplicably well-developed protective streak when it came to Sherlock. They should have had him out within hours, and yet the days were dragging on. Long enough that he had been forced to succumb to the toast Moriarty’s guards pushed on him, and twice had to suffer being cuffed and walked down a nondescript hallway to the toilet.

Sherlock was starting to wonder just how badly British international affairs were suffering as Mycroft searched when Moriarty sauntered in, pistol casually aimed at his head.

“Honey, I’m home.”

Sherlock stopped his pacing but kept quiet, evaluating. Moriarty didn’t show any of the usual signs of nerves. Was he that confident that Mycroft couldn’t find them? Could he possibly be so stupid? (He was mad. Hard to figure out how to factor that in ( ... )

Sherlock eyed the photos, his urge to leap forward and examine them tempered by - fear. Fear of what he would see.

Fear for John.

Because if Mycroft was convinced of Moriarty’s lie, John was in trouble. John would be convicted. Oh, there would be a trial, but it would be a farce. John, his John, would be branded a murderer and thrown in prison for life. He’d be all alone and in pain, without Sherlock there to keep things exciting. He’d be - unhappy.

Sherlock realized he was clenching his hands into fists and breathing hard. Interesting. Emotion is a mind killer, indeed. (Damn Mycroft’s overprotective streak. What good did it do?)

He forced himself to scoop up the photographs. The first few were stills from a street camera, showing a man roughly John’s size dragging a body that looked roughly like Sherlock’s. You couldn’t see either face, of course. Obvious, really. Mycroft should have noticed. The sentimental fool. The absolute idi - ohThe last picture was different. It was a man, alone in a cell, impossibly small and defeated. ( ... )

OP here!

This is soooo good! Not having Mycroft as an ally is the scariest part of this whole scenario I think. Learning that would definitely be an "oh crap" moment for both John and Sherlock.

He banged his head against the mattress in frustration. He was Sherlock Holmes. How could concentrating be so hard? (Emotion is a mind killer.) (Of course.) (I will burn the heart out of you.) (Apparently.)

He hurled the photograph across the room, ignoring the prick of tears in his eyes.

Very nice! Well, sad actually, but also nice!

Man this is scary. And Sherlock doubting whether John is grieving over him is the sweetest thing ever.

Harry’s eyes were wide and sad through the glass that separated them; voice the sharp clear staccato of sobriety. Somewhere in the sleep-deprived muddle of his thoughts John found it touching that his potential incarceration merited what appeared to be several days without alcohol ( ... )

Sherlock had a plan. It wasn’t, as his plans went, the most airtight concept, but after a week of observing his surroundings, sizing up the guards, and worrying to the point of incoherence about John, he concluded it was the best he was going to come up with. It was better than doing nothing, alone and twitching with boredom and uselessness. So he ate the dry toast and half rotted apples that passed for meals, and even managed to coax himself into a few hours of fitful sleep each night, building what strength he could ( ... )

OP!

Loved the latest posts! The conversation with John and Harry was great. I like how you gave a little look into their past to help show why Harry might think John was capable of it. John's really getting painted into a corner isn't he?

And Sherlock's escape attempt felt genuinely frantic. And now he's been shot?!! God, it's all going to hell for both of them!

Harry’s lawyer friend was named Joyce, a severe woman with a crisp suit and a tight bun. She was all business, pulling neat files from a high-end leather briefcase and snapping off terms and procedures that washed over John without registering.

The first time they met, she explained how he was going to go the Magistrates' Court for a trial that was purely procedural, and from there would be hauled back to jail to await the real trial, where his fate would be decided.

“I might be able to get you bail for the period between, but Harry wouldn’t pay it, so there’s really no point,” she told him, so matter-of-factly John couldn’t even be offended. He didn’t want to go back to the empty flat, anyway.

The first trial came and went just as she said, and he barely noticed. There was no one there he recognized, just the lawyers and the judge and their pointless legal banter. He hid his head in his arms as the prosecutor talked, trying to cover his ears. They said Sherlock and dead too many times. He didn’t want to hear, didn’t want to think ( ... )

He had months to wait until his real trial. Months alone in a cell, eating alone (he refused to talk to the other inmates, and somehow it got around that he was a war hero, which was enough to leave him unharassed, for the most part), always alone except for Joyce’s visits ( ... )

OP

“Maybe there’s a reason for that.” Grrr. Joyce is wonderfully awful.

And now John's doubting himself? Ugh. *hugs John*
