I only found out while there that my phone still considered me to be abroad, and using it to make calls or for data would have cost quite a lot. For people who live close to the border (and the Dutch/Belgian border is horribly convoluted) it must be a right pain if your network thinks you've strayed across it.

its one of the reason that the EU is pushing hard for harmonisation of cost across borders, what would be really good is if the prices were the same no matter where you were in europe i could use a spanish or italian phone contract in the uk, a proper free market

Sounds like a pain, yes. I believe that if you are on the border of your "home" network, if your phone can see networks from multiple countries, it will choose your "home" network by preference, even if the signal is weaker. So you should usually be safe from unexpected costs unless you hit a signal dead spot. Near the cliffs on Anglesey there are spots where there is no signal from UK networks, but you can get an Irish signal, so you've got to be careful there!
