Guys, I... have a theory! But to work with it, I'm going to need to know the birthdays of anyone who'll tell me them. I promise if I remember them I'll send you a gift for them too. I'll start: my birthday isn't all the way until November 20th.

[The youthful voice, and the use of the word "theory", intrigue Robert - especially the blend of the two elements. Plus, this seems a... nicer topic to talk about than the other ones he's been struggling with recently.

Still, his voice is unnaturally wavery and weak. (The stuttering is normal with somebody he's never met before.)]

Do you p-perhaps mean 'hypothesis'? Or do you have t-testable evidence for this theory of yours'?

... If it would be an a-assistance, my birthday is the twenty-fourth of November, or whatever equivalent your multiverse h-has in use.

So that's not Earth time? Or is it? And calm down dude, you sound pretty out of it!

[There's a thud of something metal over here then-] whoops

["Pretty out of it" is slang that Robert isn't entirely sure how to approach. So he just shoehorns his usual bluntness in instead.]

... F-Forgive me. I am... s-still not entirely accustomed to... s-speaking with new people.

...

Terran time, I believe, is... s-similar enough in practise that any differences would be... negligible.

[And at the loud thudding noise -] Ah, are... are you alright?

Totally okay here! [Some more shuffling]

So our birthdays are pretty close.

Ostensibly, y-yes.

... How is this s-significant to your... theory, though? Are you c-charting the possible distribution of birthdays for the villagers and looking for c-correlations?

... Not that I think there might be m-much useful in that... but a Luceti-wide c-census might be helpful. [Robert hums thoughtfully at this.]

...Dude, the stuttering. Kind of freaking me out.

But, as for my theory, I have a distinct incling supposed by observations that on birthdays, karmic reactions are totally out of whack!

[...]

The census idea- what's a census? Is that like a poll?

[That... is the first time Robert's ever been told his stuttering was freaking anybody out.

... Huh. Well. That's uncomfortable. Robert... noticeably tries to control it, now, though occasionally it still gets through - he's still not very good at this.]

... Ah. My apologies.

"Karmic reactions"...? What exactly do you mean by that?

A-As for a census... well, it is similar to a poll in s-some ways, I suppose, but it is not opinion-based - rather, it is based on quantifiable data, such as height, or age, or the like.

... If you were. say, t-tracking the number of people here with certain birthdays, to see whether those with particular birthdays were taken more than others... well, it might be w-worth investigation, but I cannot truly see how effectively it would convey anything.

What might be more plausible is checking to see whether certain days are associated with people being taken here...

Liiike, when people show up, or what day it is when you're poof? Because for me it was a Tuesday.

I meant more numerically, but any pattern might be interesting, if it can be found.

... The most f-frustrating thing about Luceti is that so much of this appears to be entirely random. Even after being here five months, I c-cannot discern any patterns...

[And processes like this should have patterns, right? Especially if they're something natural - yet Robert has never been able to see anything. It's all statistically random noise.

He presses a hand to his forehead with consternation.]

Couldn't the random be a pattern? Chaos Theory stuff?

[ . . . This is weird this adult seems to be out of it]

["Out of it" is putting it lightly, Dil. In the course of about a month, he's lost his foster daughter, nearly had a friend of his die in his arms, had his partner, best friend and several close friends taken to war, then had that best friend die.

... Not having the easiest time here, and it shows on top of his usual ineptness with people.]

... There might be s-something to that idea, but one would think this phenomenon would be more... concrete.

However, it is possible that the patterns are... hidden, or we are looking in the wrong places... That does t-tend to be what happens, with science. One has to explore all available avenues of the data.

You know, mister, you sound like you're pretty on the ball, science-wise. [Because he's following it, but it's also zooming over his head a tiny bit. The process more than the words]

I am a certified astrobiologist by t-training, and well-versed in the sciences.

... S-So I would certainly hope that was the impression I gave. [Science is something Robert is very dedicated to, though Luceti has sometimes made it more difficult with all of its strange, illogical processes.]

Are you perhaps in training for the sciences yourself...?

Well, a bogus career test said I should be something weird like "motivational speaker," but I'm just a kid. I'm not really sure what I want to do yet.
