He’d pushed Tessa away-maybe forever-but Will couldn’t bring himself to be surprised or saddened. If she never looked at him with admiration again, it would be too soon.
It was a strange sort of compulsion that he had, to push away everyone who showed him any affection. He had abandoned his parents. He’d kept everyone at the Institute at an arm's length to keep himself from getting too close.
Jem, well, Jem was different-he was going to die, and in a way, allowing himself to be close to Jem was more a punishment than pushing him away.
