Alright, as my token *authentically* British friend, I have a question for you. I'm reading a book of Victorian ghost stories, and they keep talking about "dissenting churches". I assume they mean Roman Catholic churches, but have no clue if this is correct. Please help a poor unbibled yank?
I think it refers to all non-anglicans, after Henry 8th's break from the pope. They fell into categories, including puritans, who were attempting to reform the anglican church from within, separatists, who wanted to break from it entirely, baptists and presbyterians, and by some definitions, catholics. There followed the Conventicle Act in 1664, the Five Mile Act in 1995, a civil war, and eventually we got the Declaration of Indulgence in 1672 and the Act of Toleration in 1689 which wound the entire mess up.
