I don't know if you've read The Silmarillion or not, but here's a couple recs:
~ Another Man's Cage by Dawn Felagund. In the Time of the Trees, during the Bliss of Valinor, the young family of Fëanor experience the everyday triumphs and tragedies of life in paradise. But as Fëanor's genius blossoms and his sons grow into their roles in Tirion society, tensions build that will sunder the House of Finwë and drive the House of Fëanor to open rebellion. Rated Adult (The site's rating covers both Mature and Explicit.) 361,000 words. It's one of the seminal fics in the fandom and influences a lot of writers since it was written a decade ago.
I also adore Pandemonium_213's fics, which range from drabbles to novels, with a variety of characters. But she mainly writes an incredibly well-characterized Sauron and doesn't flinch from the darkness, so heed the warnings.
One LotR (book-based) rec: Keep Alive the Memory by Celeritas. A young hobbit's life is turned upside-down when she learns to read. A tale of

You know, I've had a copy of it for years but never gotten around to reading it. I'm otherwise pretty familiar with Tolkien's stuff, so I could probably read this and not be too horribly lost.
Hi, I found you on the Snowflake master post, and since I love long plotty fics, I thought I'd rec you a few of my favorites, all slash.
Dragonlord (87211 words) by Icarus Chapters: 8/8 Fandom: Stargate Atlantis, Dragonriders of Pern - Anne McCaffrey Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard Characters: John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Elizabeth Weir, Teyla Emmagan, Ronon Dex, Evan Lorne Additional Tags: Dragons, Politics, Family, Culture Shock, Mating Flight, Alternate Universe - Fusion Summary: A bewildered John, lead contender to the Hold of Benden, is caught in the male-bonding, homoerotic culture of the Dragonweyr when he inadvertently Impresses a dragon.
That one's locked to the archive, so you need an AO3 account. It's a crossover, based in Pern, but the author does a great job of world building so I think you can read it even if you're unfamiliar with the fandoms.
I love giving recs, and I love long and plotty fics, and because I saw your post on snowflake challenge, I thought I might leave you some. I am not really into rpf, but long and plotty in any fandom I can do. I tried to include as many different fandoms as I could, because you said you wanted to branch out and I don't know which ones you already know. Hope you enjoy!^^
Chosen Man by Sineala. The Eagle of the Ninth, Esca/Marcus. I don't know the canon, but I enjoy this fic very much.
Arcadiaby Sineala. The Professionals, Bodie/Doyle. Same thing, no idea about the canon but I like the fic very much.
By Any Other Name by liannabob. Avengers/Hansel and Gretel: Witchhunters Crossover, gen. There is also a podfic of this, and if you're into podfic, I'd recommend it, because it's very good.
Epistolary: The 50 Years Before We Were Born (Doctor Who): http://archiveofourown.org/works/1243945 In 1942 Manhattan, Amy contacts Edwin Bracewell & begins a friendship that will last half a century. Through correspondence & journals spanning 50 years she & Rory leave a chronicle of their lives and a legacy for the Doctor to remember them by. Post The Angels Take Manhattan.
The Search For Life And Death (Harry Potter): http://archiveofourown.org/works/965882 Harry and his friends have been dreaming of seven artifacts that, when brought together, can summon Life and Death. Voldemort seeks them so he can become immortal, and Dumbledore seeks them to stop Voldemort. When Harry and his friends are sent into another realm through their dreams to find these artifacts before both Voldemort and Dumbledore, they begin to unwittingly unleash old magics that have been thought lost to time, and

Those all look really good! Especially the Doctor Who one, but I'm a sucker for Amy.
And I am all for a librarian AU! Someone was just telling me I should write one now, but I think I've got too many WIPs. Reading one will be even more fun :D
Epistolary is probably my favourite DW fic right now - it's still a WIP, but it's long and well worth a read. :)
I plan to make a start on Shine My Way at the end of this month - figured that since I'm a library technician and studying for my librarian degree, and I volunteer at a library in my uni breaks, it was the perfect fic for me to write. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
