Lavender had always wanted a summer wedding. Even if good weather couldn’t be guaranteed, she’d grown to associate the time of year with the different flowers that bloomed and just the natural beauty of it: it was just simply one of her favourite times of the year. It was her father’s influence and one she didn’t mind at all.

They’d chosen late June and Lavender had thought of vibrant gerberas, their bold, simple shape setting off the simplicity of her dress. A strapless ivory tea dress, Lavender didn’t want to get lost in a sea of frothy lace and netting when they were having the wedding at her parent’s house amid the wildly colourful garden of a herbologist who couldn’t quite make up his mind what he wanted to grow.

Lavender’s heels crunched on the gravel as she stood at the end of the path. She had to look down for a moment to make she was still holding her small bouquet; golden orange gerberas to contrast with the groom’s dark blue robes. Ron’s dark blue robes. She could hear the buzz of chatter from the area where they’d set up the large white marquee for the ceremony.

She turned to look at Parvati, her best friend literally by her side now. She wore dark blue, too, soft robes that didn’t do as much to hide her swelling figure as Lavender had originally thought. If Parvati was the slightest bit insecure about her appearance, it didn’t show; she was gorgeous. Lavender even had a pang of jealously for a moment, but she had long since learnt to accept that things in this relationship happened at their own speed.

“I’m getting married,” Lavender whispered.

Parvati beamed indulgently and nodded. “Yes, you are.” Her hand darted inside her robes and she pulled out a handkerchief. “Here,” she murmured, dabbing Lavender’s eyes for her and careful not to disturb her make-up. “I think Ron’s the luckiest wizard in the country right about now.”

Lavender laughed softly, sighing. “After Dean, of course,” she teased.

“Well.” Parvati smiled. “That goes without saying.” She tucked the handkerchief away and stood back as another set of footsteps crunched out of the house. “Ron won’t be able to think straight when he sees you.”

“Probably not.” Lavender gave her a nervous grin. She didn’t think she’d be able to breathe properly when she saw Ron, not when he was standing there waiting for her. Lavender had been waiting for this day since Ron had asked for her hand and it seemed a little unreal that it had finally arrived.

He father held out his arm. “Are you ready, Petal?”

“Yes. I think so. Are you?” He took her arm and Lavender felt a knot in her stomach tighten.

“Don’t think I’ll ever be ready to give my only girl away.” Duncan Brown kissed her temple. “Come on,” he said, giving his sporran a last-minute adjustment, “let’s go do this.”

Lavender barely noticed walking with him. Afterwards, she just remembered standing at the end of the aisle that ran between their families and friends and meeting Ron’s eyes. The knot in her stomach untwisted easily as she looked at him, a bright smile breaking across her face as her nerves completely disappeared.

It suddenly seemed absurd to her that she’d been nervous in the first place. This was Ron. This was her future and there was no reason to be afraid.
