I can't imagine how people can not-love animals and live without pets. We always had a pet friend since we were about 8 or so, and the 8-months long pet-less period when I went back to Prague and had to leave the cat in the Nedherlands was absolutely horrible. The house is so empty when you're used to the presence of another living being.
