Title: Orange Sky
Pairing: Katori Shingo/Kanno Miho ft. Mizuki Arisa and Inagaki Goro
Note: I just want to write again particularly about this forbidden ship. |D Beware of the cheesiness.

The sun was starting to set and the sky is in the color of orange as he walked in the streets of his hometown with his wife. They arrived earlier and he toured her around the place after having their breakfast and seeing his relatives. His wife seemed to enjoy going around and looking at places and to keep her entertained he told her everything about what he did in a certain place as a young child. He showed her his favorite place and where he and his friends usually go to play. He was surprised that everything didn’t change that much, even the old convenience store where he always hung out in high school was still there.

When he mentioned that, his wife became excited and asked her to show his old high school building. He hesitated as bits and pieces of memories flashed in his mind. Most of them are full of happiness but there’s this certain memory that he had been trying to forget completely but it will never disappear easily especially the feeling he had felt during that time.

He still agreed to show his wife where he used to study. They arrived in front of the orange-dyed building after a while. It was summer vacation so just a few people mostly personnel were in the area. It looked ordinary but the building was surely renovated to make it appear new but he could still see familiar corners and trees. The benches were still there though they were also newly painted. He was not sure what to feel. Here was the place where his youth took its peak, where he had his most-carefree days mixed with strain and stress from school work and where he experienced his first love and most tremendous heartache.

Closing his eyes, he let the memories flood in.

“Shingo!”

A cheerful voice made him look up from his shoes and he smiled as he saw his girlfriend, Miho’s pretty face.

“Let’s go home?” she asked.

“Sure.”

They walked outside in the blissful afternoon sunlight and he stretched his hand towards hers and she smiled as they held hands. She playfully swayed their hands together as they discussed what they will do tomorrow. It was finally Friday and examination week was finally over so they can go out and have fun after the very tiring and stressful week.

“Hmm, how about going to the amusement park?” he suggested and it brought another beaming smile from her face.

“That’s a good idea! It will be fun!” she exclaimed and he laughed. But he stopped when he saw her smile faltered a bit. He looked at the people she was staring at and he saw it was Inagaki Goro, their schoolmate and a year higher than them, and he was with a girl.

“Is that his girlfriend?” he quietly asked Miho but she didn’t answer.
Goro saw them and he waved. They waved back then they continued their way. Miho continued their discussion and she was smiling happily again. He stared ahead and he could see their tall shadows almost merging as one when they walked close together.

He’s so happy she was with him now.  He could still remember that day when he saw her looking outside the orange colored sky as if she’s searching for something in its depths. When she noticed him staring she looked at him and smiled. That’s when he fell in love for the first time.  He didn’t pursue her immediately, though. He was shy. It was only in their second year that he had the courage to tell her and he was overjoyed and she said yes to him.

Now they were inseparable. They always did things together and they were happy. They are times they had misunderstandings but he knew it’s normal for couples to have small fights.

“See you tomorrow! Don’t forget, okay?” Miho told him.

“Of course I won’t. I’ll fetch you at 10 AM.” He said to her as he let her hand go.

She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before going inside her house.

Tomorrow will be fine. He thought to himself as he walked to his home.

Weeks later, a text message from Miho shattered his belief that everything will be fine and nothing can ever destroy them.

They met in the playground on the top of the hill. Miho was crying.

“I’m sorry, I can’t pretend anymore.”

That’s what she said on the text earlier and he couldn’t get why she’s repeating them again.

“Why?” he whispered, his throat constricting and tears stinging his eyes. “Is my love not enough?”

“I’m really sorry.”

“I love you.” he said, trying to make his voice not falter.

“I don’t. Let’s break up.”

That’s all and she ran away. He stared at her silhouette until she disappeared then he slowly sat on one of the swings. He took a deep breath to calm his aching heart but he couldn’t. Tears flowed down from his eyes and he covered them with his hand.

He knew from the start that she didn’t really love him the way he loved her. He knew she loved someone else and it’s Goro. He knew about her subtle ways of looking at their schoolmate and it hurt him but he still tried his best to win her heart fully and he believed that she could learn to love him.

But she’s gone now. His love was not able to survive. Instead, he was left there to pick up the broken pieces alone and he knew that no matter how he tried holding them carefully,  they would always pierce him and make him bleed.

--

“Shingo?”

A female’s voice pulled him back to the present. He looked towards her and he was surprised when he was greeted by Miho’s face and standing beside her is Goro.

He smiled at them genuinely. “Long time no see.”

They smiled back and walked closer to them. “I thought I will never see you here again.” Miho told her.
“I decided to come back and show my hometown to my wife.” Shingo said as he glanced to the woman beside her. “This is my wife, Arisa.”

“Nice to meet you.” Arisa greeted them as she smiled.

They had a short conversation, trying to catch up with things. He congratulated them when he learned that Miho and Goro are expecting their first baby and then afterwards they said their goodbyes. As they walked from opposite directions, Shingo looked back for a while and he saw Miho was doing the same thing too. He could see a tinge of guilt in her eyes. He looked in front of him again. He thought that he would never be able to move on from his heartache. He was so sure that by seeing his old high school building he will feel the pain again but he was wrong this time. He felt peace especially when he saw her again after so many years.

He brought Arisa’s hand on his lips then he looked at Arisa.

“What?” she asked with humor in her voice and eyes.

“You’re so beautiful.”

Arisa just smiled and they walked home in a comfortable silent. Many people said that first love never dies but here’s a living proof that love was sweeter the second time around.
