depression update #2

Apr 12, 2013 10:01

I saw the nurse practitioner last week, and I think he will be my new psychiatrist. he is really, really kind. he seems to be a bit less intellectual than some that I've had, but... I don't really need that for this relationship? I more just need someone who makes me feel comfortable and who listens. since med management sessions will always be ( Read more... )

The first two paragraphs make a lot of sense. We've talked in the past about the pros/cons of labels, etc... but ultimately, I think it's just important to find an understanding of your symptoms that fits into the overall understanding of self. Otherwise why would you keep going with treatment? And you have found a way of understanding your challenges that's true to the bigger picture of who you are (an artist, a very sensitive and empathetic person), but is also realistic, neither overly stigmatized/self-pitying nor too optimistic and rosy. Kind of awesome really ( ... )

I AM DRUNK. here is encouragement!!

But seriously-- don't think it's ever too late to do anything in life unless it's about physical limitations. Mentally, we are quite boundless creatures-- designed to withstand almost anything and survive well. You're only too late for ED treatment if you convince yourself of it. There's no way to really prove you missed the mark there, imo.

GO FOR IT! You deserve a healthy relationship with all things in your life, like anyone does.

yay drunk encouragement. I will remember this, although for now I think 2x weekly therapy is as much as I can do-- but I'm glad to know the option is out there, and that it isn't too late.

It sounds like you think that things could be better. That, to me, says that this is a good thing. I think once it is better under control, it will take away some of the image problems.

And .. getting a good, healthy schedule going will help in other ways, I think. That is the beauty of a routine, since it frees your mind up for other things. But it sounds like it's not just a matter of planning and execution, and that this will allow you to address some of the underlying factors.

I know I post a lot about food, and cooking, and my fitness goals on my livejournal. If any of that is kinda triggery for you, I can put it under cuts or otherwise hidden.

Yeah. I often feel better about how I look in clothes just because I've had a really healthy meal. Realistically there is no way that I actually look different after eating *one* salad (for example), but self-perception is a tremendously powerful thing.

Re: lj cuts, no need for that. I find it pretty inspiring to see how fit and healthy you (and Jill and Pat) have gotten! The only thing is that I do want to be like someday myself, and sometimes it just seems like an impossible gap from where I am now to where you guys are... but obviously you didn't get there overnight either. I guess it would be kind of cool to also hear about what your early efforts were like, and some of the more basic ways you maintain/plan for a healthy diet. Do you do a lot of cooking on the weekend and eat leftovers throughout the week, for example? What parts of your diet are routine, and what parts are more flexible? What things still kind of suck? Stuff like that. :)
