Here is my review/reaction to tonights episode of Numb3rs, 5x20 The Fifth Man.
Okay now. This is an episode that I've been looking forward to since I first read the description, which was about 10 days ago. I've been dying to see it. I was literally counting down the minutes. Good times.. :D I was slightly afraid of it being a ginormously huge let-down, like Arrow of Time. My favourite part of the show is the relationship between the Eppes brothers, and if there is ever a hint of some whumping or brotherly love moments I get ever so excited! I was very happy when this episode actually lived up to my expectations! The only part that disappointed me was the brothers interaction at the end. Would it kill them to spend more then 3 minutes together??? Sheesh.. Anyways, I'll come back to that.
First off, I loved how Charlie got distracted during the move into his new office, and began writing on the cardboard boxes. That's just classic Charlie.
I think the action sequence was pretty darn good, but then again I have a crappy tv where you cannot see a thing in dark shots. Usually this works to my advantage, as I'm a bit of a fraidy cat, and tend to start freaking out whenever that ominous music starts playing. Then there are times like this when it makes me miss a good action sequence. I'm not even completely sure how Don got injured. Note to self: must rewatch this episode on a brighter screen.
I found that the reactions of Don's friends and family were quite realistic and well done. I was surprised by how much it affected Colby, as shown when he was interrogating the teacher. *squishes Colby* I am ever so proud of how Charlie handled it. Remember when he basically shut down and began working furiously on P vs NP in Uncertainty Principle waaaaay back in season 1? Sure he didn't sleep and kept blaming himself for something that he really couldn't have known, but he kept working on the case and eventually helped solve it! It still may not be the healthiest route but it is an improvement! He showed how much stronger he has grown through working with Don at the FBI.
I was, however, extremely angry with Alan. The things he said to Charlie at the hospital, knowing full well that Charlie was already blaming himself.. grr.. I understand that he was a parent whose worst fear was a heartbeat, or lack of heartbeat, away from happening, but I don't think that excuses him from what he said. I'm hoping for an apology of some kind sometime in the near future.
I loved the moments of comfort between Nikki and Charlie, David and Charlie and especially Amita and Charlie. I was pleasantly surprised by Nikki's softer side when she was talking to Charlie before giving him the hard drive. I've been rather undecided with her and it was nice to see a more compassionate side of her. The David and Charlie scene after they had caught Radovic was pretty cute. Amita's care and support of Charlie throughout the entire episode was lovely. She was constantly by Charlie's side, helping him, comforting him and gently prodding and pushing him when needed. Charlie needs to get his act together and propose to her! I would LOVE to see a Charmita wedding at some point next season.. :)
When Don's heart stopped, so did mine. I knew subconsciously that he was going to live, but that didn't stop be from gasping, covering my mouth with my hands during the entire commercial break (which was EVIL by the way!) and repeating 'Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!' for a good few minutes.
Another 'Oh my God!' moment for me was when Charlie went to get the diamonds all by his little ole self. Thankfully, he had been smart and told the team before he went off, but I was rather surprised that David had let Charlie be the decoy. Once again, I think this shows how much Charlie has grown as a person and become a stronger person. *squishes Charlie*
I found it rather amusing that Don received three pink Hello Kitty balloons. I was ever so excited when Alan herded everyone out of the room so that Don and Charlie could 'catch up' (Hmm.. I wonder if that was a bit of an apology to Charlie for blaming him earlier.. I shall pay closer attention to that when I rewatch the episode..). However, as I said above, I was extremely disappointed with the brothers' interactions. There was no physical contact (not even a shoulder squeeze!!), no thank-yous, or I-was-worrieds, and then Charlie just left, after the shortest possible visit. I mean, Alan had just taken the group for some ever so lovely, stale hospital coffee (which is probably horrid), the least Charlie could do was hang out until they came back! But nooooo.. I get that the brothers aren't the most articulate, and most of what they feel goes unspoken, but would it kill them to show just a teeny, tiny, itsy, bitsy bit of brotherly affection?? Ah well.. maybe next week.. ;).
