Thank you for reading! I too had this reaction even while writing the chapter: Ennis just won't do what I want him to much of the time. Sighhh. But don't worry--new chapter tomorrow! :)
A couple of chapters ago Ennis told Jack he wanted Jack to need him as much as Ennis needed Jack. Well, he did that, and now he's dropping Jack like a hot potato. Lureen has her Patrick and their child and of course Bobby will stay with her, Ennis has his girls and his wife, and Jack is left with nothing. I can't decide if I'm happy that he got a leave of absence from his job and didn't just up and quit so he at least has something or ticked off because if he goes back there then Ennis will know where to find him next time he gets the urge to shove the knife in Jack's back a little deeper. Jack was finding a place to belong before Ennis came along and stoked the fires of his dreams just so they could be drowned in cold water. Ennis isn't thinking of anyone but himself. He just promised Jack the world and now all he can think about is if he can live without Jack. I guess he doesn't give a damn about Jack needing him now.
It frustrates me, too, when we can see that Ennis considers everything his family needs without considering what Jack needs--because of course Jack is his family too. Jack is always careful about planning for the future, and clearly that isn't one of Ennis's talents. Hope you enjoy tomorrow's update and that it helps take care of some of these problems. Thanks for reading!
Ennis what the HELL! Was it you who was thinking this?
They spent the rest of the day together, quietly, doing what had to be done around the house and with each other. Together they set out to untangle the messes they had left behind them, trying to find a way to bring their separate and difficult lives back together again. It was more than a single, charmed moment, or hour, or day, that had shown them where they were now meant to be. Whatever they did for the rest of this day-sleeping, eating, talking, laughing, making phone calls, playing a half-assed game of poker in front of the TV-they were only ever saying to each other: Don’t go. Please don’t go. and I wish I could stay. God knows, I don’t want nothin’ else.
Now you're not planning on leaving ALMA! You know I wouldn't make me come after you, Ennis! Cause right now I feel like hitting you over the head with a fry pan! OH!
Ennis tends to think about things in the here and now more than in the future sometimes, I think. He needs Jack to show him the bigger picture. This chapter frustrated me, too--I hope tomorrow's update makes it better. Thank you so much for reading. :)
After all the wonderful declarations from Ennis to Jack, we get Ennis retreating back to the man before he met Jack. I'm so sad, disappointed and angry with Ennis, how can he do this to poor Jack? He must know he will never be happy with Alma. Alma wont make him happy and Alma's not stupid, she knows he's not there really, maybe in body, but not in mind. I cant stand the thought of Jack at home, thinking he's got Ennis and everything is going to be ok.
This was a brilliant chapter Jen, so emotional and full of beautifully expressed love and desire - the bedroom scene was hot! - and the description of Ennis's journey back home was sad but sweetly written. I just hope that all our fears are not true, that Ennis will see the light and know that the love of his life is not in Riverton. Jack needs you Ennis!
Hi hon, thanks so much for your lovely comments. Ennis frustrates me, too, because he doesn't always realize that he's surrounded by people who love him and therefore can figure out what's really going on with him. Alma isn't fooled, and I don't think she really wants half a man, either, so all we need to do is wait--and hope that Ennis can learn from Alma's and Jack's insights into things. xx Jen
