The Final Match

Location: The Coliseum.
Time: Two days after the last fights.
Summary: The last of the death matches.

The king and the liar held their thrones as ones who had held many thrones many times before. And though the liar smiled, and though the king seemed not to care, they were waiting. They were waiting for an out. They were waiting for an endgame.
They always had one eye on the future. They had expectation or hope or fear. So they gave that to those who were now fighting, and if the coin toss was lucky, everyone might just get out of this alive.
The king said, “Marta Lualdi.”
The liar said, “Doctor.”
The king said, “Do what you will.”
For the first time, the trick they used to start the hourglass was revealed. The card Death was set atop the hourglass, and on either side was one of their decks, each top card carefully selected.
Today, for the first time since these matches started, someone had to win.
