Title: Meant to be
Rating: PG-13
Summary: What if the one person you loved was the one person you weren’t meant to be with? Confusion of the heart is always hard to deal with, and has become one of the new barriers to all as they struggle to come to terms with what’s hidden within.

Disclaimer: I OWN THEM! Not really, but don't I wish I could!

“Massu! Massu!” Tegoshi cried, waving his hand in front of his friend’s face. Masuda was shaken out of his reverie.

“What’s up?” he asked, giving Tegoshi an innocent look.

“Why don’t you tell me?” Tegoshi said, folding his arms. “I’ve been talking to you for the last ten minutes, and you haven’t even been listening, have you?”

“Of course I have!” Masuda threw back, defensively.

“Really? What was I just saying?” Tegoshi challenged.

“You were talking about your hair?” Masuda said, uncertainly.

Tegoshi shook his head, annoyed. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Masuda wasn’t the type to space out during a normal conversation, nor was he one to blatantly ignore someone when they were talking, he was much too nice.

“Nothing,” Masuda said, turning towards his soda. They were sitting in a small restaurant, having a quick dinner.

“If it’s nothing you won’t have a problem telling me,” Tegoshi replied. “Because you know by now, I can tell exactly when you’re lying.”

Masuda didn’t know how to reply without talking himself into a corner. “You know, these psychology courses don’t just help with a career, I know all the tricks to lying, the underlying reasons for lying, how to deduce what the person is lying about, just from what you say, how you say it and from the fact that your facing the wall rather than me,” Tegoshi said, as he popped a few bits of fruit into his mouth.

Masuda felt himself turn red, Damn tegoshi and his psychology, he thought. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Tegoshi, nearly 8 years working together, and friends for about 7, how could he not trust him?

“Can you not psychoanalyze me?” Masuda asked, not looking at him.

“Too late, I already started, you know once I start I can’t stop,” Tegoshi answered, nonchalantly.

“Do you know how annoying you are sometimes?” Masuda asked, letting out a frustrated sigh.

“It’s okay, you love me anyway Massu,” Tegoshi said giving the man a little pinch in the cheek. Not many were allowed to do that, well really it was just Tegoshi who was allowed, if anyone else had tried that they probably would have ended up sprawled on their back with Masuda’s footprints all over their face, or well maybe just a slightly hurt ego when he glared at them. Masuda didn’t like anyone in his personal space.

Masuda didn’t dispute the fact, but gave a huff, and sucked the rest of his soda up through the straw. Tegoshi eyed him, he was still sucking at air, making the annoying ‘whoosh’ sounds only children ever make.

“You know, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you behave this way,” Tegoshi commented.

“What are you talking about? I always behave this way,” Masuda replied.

“Yes, you always behave like an annoyed 12 year old?” Tegoshi asked.

Masuda didn’t reply. “The last time I saw you like this, was when you…”

“When I what?”

Tegoshi gave Masuda an even stare before replying, “when you were completely head over heels for that girl back when we were doing ‘gachibaka’.”

The effect of Tegoshi’s statement was immediate, Masuda dropped his straw, and his back stiffened.

Tegoshi smirked, “Massu, are you in love?”

Masuda’s face hardened as he tried to look anywhere but at the man sitting across from him. “With who? Tell me Massu!” Tegoshi demanded, leaning forward, and giving the older man a penetrating gaze. “Don’t you trust me?”

“Look, it’s not that I don’t trust you, I do. I’d trust you with my life, and you know that already,” Masuda began. “I just don’t feel like talking about this.”

Tegoshi paused for a moment, he wasn’t one to give up easily, and he would most definitely get it out of Masuda, he just had to take a pause and think about it.

“Fine, don’t tell me yet.” Tegoshi relented. There was silence for a few moments before Tegoshi dove in again. “It’s been a while since you’ve been in love though.”

“What are you talking about? I’ve been in plenty of relationships already,” Masuda said, giving Tegoshi a strange look.

“Yes you’ve been in relationships, but you haven’t had that look of madly, deeply, and completely, head over heels love,” Tegoshi replied.

Masuda blinked, and shook his head, “How exactly would you know that?”

“You’re one of my best friends, I know these things,” Tegoshi said, matter-of-factly. ”What I can’t figure out, is why you never asked that girl out back then. I mean you guys used to hang out together, a lot.”

Masuda turned a bit pink, “Well, yeah we did, but I, well one time we were hanging out and she mentioned to me how nice it was to hang out with a guy who she didn’t have to worry about ever making a move on her, because we were close enough that I wasn’t a real guy,” he said in a rush.

Tegoshi’s jaw dropped, “eh?! She said that?”

Masuda nodded, slowly. “And you still hung out with her even after we finished filming?!” Tegoshi asked looking scandalized.

“For a bit, but then she started nagging me about how much I eat,” Masuda replied, scratching his chin thoughtfully.

“So I take it, the person you like now doesn’t comment about how much you eat?” Tegoshi asked, slyly.

“Well kinda, I mean he makes fun of how much I eat sometimes,” Masuda replied, absentmindedly.

“HE?” TEgoshi asked a bit surprised.

Masuda nearly choked on his tempura. “Ack, I didn’t say he,” he said, through coughing.

“Yes you did! You said, ‘he makes fun of how much I eat sometimes’!” Tegoshi said, mimicking Masuda’s previous statement.

Masuda blushed, “it’s okay,” Tegoshi assured him. “It’s not that big of a deal, but now,” he said, giving Masuda his signature devilish grin. “I’m really interested.”

“There’s nothing interesting about it,” Masuda mumbled.

“Who is it?” Tegoshi persisted.

Masuda remained silent. “You know if you don’t tell me who it is, I’ll figure it out for myself, and when I do, you won’t be happy,” Tegoshi warned.

“Fine!” Masuda burst out, annoyed. Tegoshi smiled bitterly, he always knew how to get things out of the dimpled man.

Masuda took a sharp breathe, before mumbling something Tegoshi couldn’t quite hear.

“Sorry?”

Masuda glared at him, and mumbled again. Tegoshi shook his head, and leaned forward a bit. And Masuda again gave him a dirty look before he said it again. This time Tegoshi heard it, it was just above a whisper, “Shige.”

“EH?!” was Tegoshi’s loud and annoying response. “You like him?”

Masuda shushed him, and gave the younger man, a sharp smack on the head. It was painful, but it did quiet him down. Once he’d calmed down, Tegoshi was still staring at Masuda with the same shocked expression, while rubbing his throbbing head.

“Will you put your hand down? I didn’t hit you that hard,” Masuda said.

Tegoshi pouted, before dropping his hand. “You like him?” he asked again, this time quite a few octaves lower.

Masuda merely blushed. “Since when?”

“A while,” Masuda answered vaguely.

“How about an interval of time?” Tegoshi prodded.

“I don’t really know when, I just realized it one day,” Masuda said.

“Was it before we did the last tour?” Tegoshi asked.

There was a pause before Masuda nodded. “WOW! That’s a long time!” Tegoshi cried. “How could I have not of noticed?”

Masuda was tempted to swat at the younger man again, but decided against it. He was just trying to help after all. “Because I didn’t even know then,” Masuda said.

Tegoshi nodded, “But him of all people,” Tegoshi muttered. Masuda gave him a sharp look.

“What’s wrong with him?” He asked, a very sharp undertone added to his question.

Tegoshi let out a sigh, knowing he’d just unknowingly offended his best friend. “There’s nothing wrong with him, he’s just a bit slow,” Tegoshi explained.

Masuda arched an eyebrow at him, that made no sense; the brain of the group was slow?

“I mean in matters of the heart, do you realize he had the same girl crushing on him for about three years, before she exploded and ended up throwing rice balls at his face?” Tegoshi said. “Oh, and then he came to me and Koyama acting really confused! Really the girl had been openly flirting with him all the time!”

Masuda nodded slowly, he remembered that, that had happened when they were about 17, and Shige had come into the studio the next day looking very troubled.

“Yeah, I know,” Masuda mumbled.

“Well it’s going to take a lot of work, but I think we can make it work,” Tegoshi said, with a nod.

“Make what work?”

“You and Shige of course,” Tegoshi said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “We’ll open his eyes for him,” he said nodding.

Masuda looked ready to argue, but Tegoshi silenced him with a wave of his hand. Tegoshi always got what he wanted, and what he wanted this time was for his best friend. And he’d be damned if he didn’t open Shige's eyes to the treasure before him.

It was just about time to set things in motion.

Author's Note: And there it is, the start of my Shige/Massu fic that I'm sure everyone had gotten tired of hearing about. It took me quite a while to come up with the title and Summary. I'm actually not quite happy with the summary, so I may edit it later on if I can come up with a better one. The title, I think fits well, so that definitely won't change.

I have the next few chapters written for the story, although I still need to give them all a thorough read-through. Also a quick note about future updates, I'm pretty busy with things at the moment so I probably won't be able to update until next week.

And so ends my long and semi-pointless Note =)

Comments and Criticisms are greatly appreciated!

shigemassu is real damnit!
