Shige let out a choked cry, spitting out dry sand, and spluttering around sounding like a dying pigeon.
Koyama let out a laugh, “That’s really attractive,” he said.
Shige pouted up at him, “I’m sure I make a sexy sand-sculpture.”
Indeed buried three feet in the sand Shige felt anything but sexy. A quick look around told him that the female population on the beach agreed with him, the only looks he was garnering were more on the questioning side than anything else.
“Just a little more time, Shige!” The six year old declared, running back in time to dump another heavy bucket of wet sand on the already large heap, sitting docilely atop of Shige’s chest.
Shige gave the boy a forced smile. And waited until the boy had run far enough to turn a scowl on Koyama.
“Why am I the one being buried alive?” he demanded.
“Because you lost the ramen-eating contest,” Koyama replied promptly.
“And I participated in that, why?” Shige asked, his scowl only growing.
“Because Ryo-kun dared you too.”
Shige had no response to that particular answer. Instead he gave Koyama a dirty look, which only intensified when he saw a rather pretty girl walk past, and shoot the two boys a look short of a grimace.
Moments later the six year old boy came prancing back, a thin and pointy stick in one hand and another bucket of wet sand in the other.
He looked ready to sculpt, while Shige looked ready to cringe.
“Ready, Shige?” the boy asked.
“He sure is, Aoi-chan,” Koyama said with a grin.
Shige cursed his luck, and bit down on his lower lip, praying dearly that the pinches he felt on his left leg weren’t crabs, but just his wildly overactive imagination.
“YOSH!” Aoi cried, before jumping on top of the small mountain he’d created and setting to work carving out crooked lines.

Shige glared at angry red bites that littered his left ankle. It was just his luck to be buried alive on top of a nest of angry sand crabs.
Sunset was approaching, yet the beach was still heavily populated, most of the sandy shore littered with large groups of young teens and university students out for the summer sun.
He sat quietly observing them, while rubbing his aggravated ankle.
Koyama fell down on the seat beside him, an ice pack and chilled bottles of green tea in the other.
Wordlessly he pulled on Shige’s left foot and daintily arranged the ice pack over the swollen bites.
Shige blushed, noting the stares he was garnering yet again, and rather awkwardly pulled his leg out of Koyama’s grasp.
Koyama for his part seemed unfazed, and responded by tossing Shige his bottle of green tea.
“Thanks,” he muttered in gratitude, before chugging it down quickly and then almost choking in the process.
Coughing up the green tea, Shige felt a rather infuriating frustration almost break out, as he felt the gaze of a rather pretty girl on him again, the same look of questioning amusement and what Shige took to mean ‘ew’'
Koyama thumped Shige lightly on the back.
Shige shrugged him off, and glowered out at the setting sun. “Why are we such losers?”
The question was meant to be rhetorical, but Koyama answered, “because…we’re cool enough to have fun.”
Shige blinked up at his best friend, silently wondering what exactly Koyama was drinking, and just why the former hadn’t shared it.
“You call being buried alive, burned, bitten, and gawked at fun?” Shige asked, disbelievingly.
Koyama fought a grin, “I thought it was fun, didn’t you?”
Shige shook his head fervently, bruises and bites were definitely not on his list of fun things to do on his break.
Koyama frowned at him, “ I thought you liked playing with Aoi-chan.”
Shige shrugged, turning his gaze back on the setting sun.
“Girls are silly,” Koyama said, leaning back on his elbows and pensively starring at the orange tinges of light reflected on the water.
“I wouldn’t know, it’s not as though I have all that much experience with them,” Shige said, somewhat sourly.
“Well, I have, and they’re silly, I’m glad I’m spending my last holiday before university with my friends rather than girls,” Koyama said.
Shige glanced down at Koyama, soft shadows playing on his face. Being best friends with the older boy since he was in junior high, he wasn’t all that surprised with the answer, Koyama always put his friends first.
“Why?”
“I’d rather spend it having fun with you guys,” Koyama replied easily, eyes not moving from the water. “I mean that’s what summer’s for, right? Having fun with friends.”
Shige let out a light laugh, only Koyama would have such a thought. Pausing for a moment, Shige gingerly stuck his hand into the sand, pulling the hard grains out and letting it sift through his fingers, “maybe you’re right.”
“Of course I am,” Koyama said with a grin.
Shige turned to give Koyama a short reply, but was rather surprised to find Koyama giving him an odd grin, the mischievous glint in his eyes scaring him a bit.
“Kei-chan?” he asked uncertainly, sitting up a bit straighter.
“Let’s have fun,” Koyama finally said, and without another word flung the contents of a hidden bottle of water sloshing all over Shige.
Face drenched, Shige simply spluttered, unable to say anything from the shock of the icy water.
“Y-y-y-you’re going to pay for that!” he finally managed to choke out.
“If you can catch me!” Koyama challenged, already on his feet.
Shige bit down on his lower lip, shaking his head and effectively splattering a passing girl with the cold water.
“Ugh!” she cried out in disgust, giving Shige a dirty look.
A look Shige barely even processed as he jumped to his feet and ran after Koyama, letting out a war cry.
Koyama speedily ran towards the waves, hoping to elude Shige on the slippery sand, only to have Shige miraculously catch up to him and happily splash him with warm sea water.
Immediately stopping and turning, Koyama let his long arms fall to the water and send waves of water at Shige. Soon enough the to boys had fallen waist deep into the water, and were having an all out water war, crying out in hysteria as they sloshed and slipped until they ended up on the shore, utterly drenched.
Lying side by side, trying to regain his breathe, Shige let out a small sigh in content, “we’ll make this last summer the best one yet.”
Koyama nodded, “it’ll be mission: ‘F-U-N’”
Silently watching the sun finally dip behind the sea, Shige couldn’t help but think it’d probably be the best mission he’d accomplish so far.
A/N: I hope you liked it Ana! Sorry it took me so long to complete, but I hope you liked it nonetheless =D
