last year the museum acquired a bunch of things from an artist's estate (Gifford Beal), including a drawing/sketchbook and a number of little studies like this. they are incredible. it's so grand to be able to look at sketches and studies and then see the larger, finished work. can't wait til you make him sit for a real portrait!

lovely highlights, especially on his forehead. I also like how the skin behind his glasses are a slightly different color to show the glass.

i was just clicking around my bookmarks and found your portrait of Jessica. OMG. the light in her hair that extends across her cheekbones + the drip marks on the right.... the whole painting is lovely. she looks absolutely real and absolutely not at the same time (due, in part to the lighting and the marks). so glad you posted it.

Thank you! I'm still doing some detail work on Jessica's portrait, but she's got a lovely face. I'm experimenting a lot more with painterly qualities. I've had a few people give artistic feedback that I don't show enough brushwork. It's funny, since the smoothness of a surface was very valued as a technical aspect in the late 1800s...but today it's 'too finished.' So I'm trying out some other things, playing with ideas.
