Very long explanation short: He was left in the enemy territory after the rocks crushed him, he was very possibly revived and tortured for information. The best forms of torture leave no scars that you can see, and Obito could have learned that was that War is not a noble thing, and dying a Hero's death or being heroic is pointless--you don't get the girl, you don't get fame, you get dead and hurt. So he's not really trying to take over the world, I think this may have started (in his mind) to prevent his fate from happening again. From the noblest causes come the greatest douchebags.
There are a lot more ideas floating around in my head about this, obviously. I've been thinking about it for five or so years, I could probably write a thesis on Obito now.
Late reply is late...but when I finally got around to reading this chapter and the ones that followed, you were the first person I thought of. I was both laughing my ass off and screaming NOOOOOOOO as they started to hint at the stuff with Rin. DAMNIT HIKO!
