Things that make me go Hulk Smash (No Actual Avengers Content)

May 06, 2012 16:03

One of the things I've found the longer I am in fandom - especially the longer I'm in parcipatory fandoms and not just reading/watching things without interacting directly with others - is that my patience for offensive bullshit decreases by the second. And by orders of magnitude ( Read more... )

fandom, be better fandom, sort of meta?

*stands to applaud*

I've also never understood how people who claim to like a person or a character can be equally as invested in hating the people that person has chosen to have a relationship with and therefore could be fairly safely assumed to be "someone they enjoy spending time with". absolutely this! i'm sure maple has said that almost word for word on more than one occasion ( ... )

I always find it gratifying how many of the people I think are super have expressed similar sentiments at some point. <333 Because seriously. And I really don't understand wishing for their real relationships to go horribly wrong because, um, shouldn't we want people we like to be happy? MADNESS, APPARENTLY ( ... )

i just hate that every rpf fandom has to do this from scratch, every time.

YES. this. sheesh. DDDD:

I think this is related, a little (although actually far more insidious and awful) to my combination rage-boredom-eyerolling feeling about fighting the whole RPF-is-a-valid-choice debate over and over again, too, because mostly I just look at some of this crap and go "SERIOUSLY? AGAIN? DIDN'T WE DO THIS ALREADY?" Rarrrrrrrr.

I have to agree. It really is rage inducing. And so, so unnecessary. Often times in RPF we don't know the protagonist's partner well enough, so to go down the route of vilifying them because they are IN THE WAY is annoying and extremely poor writing. If that is the case, make them invisible. However, if you (general you) are going to include them, at least make them three dimensional.

I also tend to back button as quickly as I can when this happens. Or I want to make a comment that would not be nice (so I don't).

And particularly as this (in my experience) is always the female partner, it's disappointing because we (general we) should be better than that.

I really couldn't have said it any better than that, yes. And exactly. Uggggh.

I have been making more of an effort to say something when I see it, but there are definitely times when it's not possible/going to go horribly wrong really fast, sadly. Ugggh. I mean, I do want to give people the benefit of the doubt initially and assume ignorance/thoughtlessness over malice, but golly it's hard sometimes.

I'm usually caught by the overwhelming RAGE and disappointment and would not be able to articulate why this is so, so wrong in a constructive matter so I don't comment and vent at my cat. (who looks at me with so very little caring that I end up giving up).

Yeah, I definitely struggle to articulate things usefully when I'm mad, and that's one of the reasons I will avoid saying something at the time/if I have good reason to know it'll be received poorly, because me just yelling FFS WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS??? at someone isn't, unfortunately, likely to help them to improve. :/

But heh, yeah, the flatmates usually hear about it here. :D

YOU RULE AND THIS ENTRY RULES.

I tried to not have a meltdown today while watching the Avengers, because *some people* felt the need to criticize/moan every scene Natasha was in, and it came this close to ruining the experience for me. At one point, though (a minute/two minutes before the movie ended), I loudly said, "NATASHA IS THE BEST THING IN THIS MOVE." Ugh, people. >:/

Aww, thank you! I am glad it struck a chord in a good way!

And oh man, that is so sad that people apparently couldn't enjoy the awesome that is Natasha Romanov. NOT COOL AT ALL, PEOPLE. sheeeeesh! Good on you for speaking up, though. :D

PEOPLE THAT DON'T LIKE NATASHA ROMANOV NEED TO GTFO THIS PLANET, basically.

Sorry to dump that on you as my first comment, ahaha. I tend to be more chill, I promise!

...there was definitely a point earlier this week where I yelled "I WANT THESE PEOPLE TO FIND A NEW PLANET SO THEY'RE NOT ON MINE" about misogyny so I completely sympathise, and no worries, hee. :D Hi!

Yes! on everything you said- even though in my head I'm relating it to tv show discussions (since I don't read fan fic). Especially lately, it seems discussions about writing/plot are laced with subtle (or no-so-) jabs at whatever character happens to be In the Way of whatever a particular fan would like to see happen on a show. Jabs that, more often than not, revolve around physical/sexual attributes of characters that -more often than not- are female. Not only does it seem a lazy and immature way to watch a show, but it's totally disrespectful toward writers and the nuances they are writing into a character. If it's the writers who are being mysogynistic, then they are being disrespectful towards readers/viewers who expect so much more than storytelling that relies on stereotyping/villifying/laziness/hate (because *sidenote* let's be real-mysogyny isn't *funny* or something females should tolerate or 'get over'- it's hateful).
Not to be cheesy, but the more lazy/ mindless storytelling I read or watch, the more grateful I feel for ( ... )

Oh my, yes, it absolutely applies to other media as well, I couldn't agree more. And whether it's coming from the viewers or the writers, it's incredibly gross when they're leaning on that kind of misogyny in any way. And you're so right, none of us should be having to put up with this crap at all, augh.
