Hankyung never lies about anything and that’s what Kangin really loves about him, his honesty and innocence. He wants to lie now though, because the truth is ugly, as vicious as it is unavoidable. Even though Kangin knows that everything is not fine, may never be fine again, he would rather the silence than the comfort, rather loneliness than to hear Hankyung lie because of him.

"It's too late for you to make me stay."
Everything is somber and tense and everyone knows this is too harsh a punishment. To be exluded from group activites, to be forced away from the people he loved, to be robbed of the glory and joy of having their hardwork recognized. To be forced to stay away from Hankyung. Amidst the shouts of indigination and gasps of shock, Kangin can see the look of utter betrayal in those chocolate brown eyes and he knew, just knew, that the other can tell it was him who had asked for this. To run. To stay away.

Kangin still remembers the first time he had confessed, all choking words and nervous breaths and the fireworks in his heart as the other stared at him…and smiled. He remembers the way Hankyung let him watch him late in the practice rooms, just the two of them and the way those hands felt in his as they held hands under the dining table. Kangin remembers the smiles and the happiness and the ache now as he thought of how happy they had been. This was what he had to do to preserve that pure happiness, the happy memories of happy people, who weren’t happy anymore. Even if he lost everything, he couldn’t lose that.

There were greater things in life than glory and popularity and innocence and pride. There was love and there was Hankyung, and weren’t those two the same thing anyways? Kangin can plead his innocence; regain his popularity and all the glory, but the cost he was not willing to pay. Not when the others could get become involved, be condemned along with him. It was hard for a man to lay down his pride, but to protect the one he loved, Kangin was willing to do that and more.

Kangin watches Hankyung on tv, on the internet, from afar at the airport and backstage at the concerts. He watches the other shine on stage, watches him smile and misses a breath as he sees the hollowness in those eyes being filled with each touch and look. Hankyung hadn’t been dragged into his controversy, his shame. He wipes his tears away and makes sure to avoid the other, when he hears the screaming cheers on the other side of the curtain as the song ends. And he knew he had made the right decision.
