RAINDROPS IN HEAVEN (KyuHan)
The rain was falling, the heavy kind that touched every part of the earth and left nothing unblessed. The droplets were strong and full and I can feel the soft splash as it hits the back of my neck; can see the way it bounces and trembles and changes as it slides down your cheekbone. It was cool, yet not cold and it painted a new picture of the world around us, as if we were locked inside a snowglobe, only there was no snow, only us and the wetness all around.
My clothes clung to me, molded to my body and I see the way your hair is plastered all over your face, all traces of products and makeup gone as the rain washes away our masks and all the artificiality and the walls around our hearts. It’s plain and raw and so terrifyingly easy to get hurt; I could almost see the trails of the rain on my heart as it lay there on the road. I look through the rain and I wonder if there is another sky waiting for me somewhere, where there was nothing but clear skies and smooth roads.
The sky hung low above our heads and was a beautiful deep ocean of greys, full of rolling clouds and dark with promises. We follow the dips and curves of those clouds with our eyes and wonder about the wonderous places hiding behind the thick grey curtain. Dark woods peeked out along the edges of the hills around us, stretching as far as the eye could see, silent and quiet, the stillness broken only by the occasional flutter as a lone bird set off for an unknown journey.
We sit on the wet road, slick with rain, the bottom of our jeans pressed against the rough texture of the gravel. I watch as the raindrops hit our legs, the way the water pooled briefly before sliding down between the crevice where our legs are pressed against each other. The caress of the rain brightens your eyes when I glance at you and the deep red of your lips makes me want to kiss them. But I don’t, because I can do that normally and this isn’t normal; this was a stolen moment where no one and nothing existed except the two of us. This was our heaven.
The two of us sit in silence, the pitter patter of raindrops the only music playing in our world. We exchange no words, no confessions and loving messages, no heated looks and passionate embraces either. All the promises to love and cherish and to never be apart, are spoken through the way our hands are entwined on our laps.
You pull me up and then we’re running, slipping at times on the wet road, stumbling on the loose gravel, but always keeping each other upright, our hands never separating, only clasping tighter, until I swear I feel the imprint of your hands forever wrapped around mine. We run, laughing and breathless and I know that it no longer mattered how many beautiful blue skies and carpeted roads and warm shelters awaited me.
I’d always rather be running through the rain with you.
